I like the way people think the oil light is there to warn you the oil is low.
The light comes on when there is too little pressure to protect the moving parts.
The engine is wearing at an alarming rate when that lights on.
No oil pressure and a knocking noise = big end bearings most likely.
Engine out and rebuild or a new engine if its bad.

The op has not said it has no oil, and the oil pressure, or even maybe the oil level light hasn't come on.
(And a lot of cars have both nowadays)0 -

Might be time to check that oil level perhaps?
The two responses to that are:
A) Be stupid, claim it's too complicated, turn the radio up and wait for the engine to explode.Check the oil level, top it up and THEN get the car down to a garage to find out what's going on.
