    If the OP hadn't refunded the payment and simply kept asking "when THEY were coming to pick it up in person", what would they have done if the buyer did actually turn up and wanted to collect after having paid via paypal?

    You let them have it, sellers need to build that eventuality into their selling when they list for collection only.

    Some buyers will always pay by paypal, only last year I had a collection item go that was paid for by paypal, but I understood the risk and buyer was not willing to let me have cash (he wanted to use a 0% credit card) and it wasn't an electrical or baby item so I took the risk.

    You accept the possibility as soon as you list, stuff I won't take the risk on I sell elsewhere.
