party for 13 years birthday

Hi,

I am looking for ideas for my sons 13th birthday party, he has autism but is not severe, I have invited about 40 school kids but unfortunately only 8 have replied so probably going to be a bit of a disaster, anyway I will just have to deal with that, what I have booked is a disco and having a buffet in a function suite the party is for 2 and a half hours so not quite sure what things to do as I only have one child so dont know what teenagers like or dont like?

I would love some ideas to pass the time.

thanks

  • What a shame only a few have responded. I've always found people leave these things to the last minute which is very frsutrating. I'm not going to be much help I'm afraid as my two haven't hit the teenage years yet so not done an adolescent party yet! What is your son into? If there is only going to be 10 or so maybe you could set up a Wii or similar to do some party games in rotation? Rather than a disco which will be a bit flat with only a few there, is there an activity he would like to do? What about "Go-Ape" (climbing activity through trees offered in some Forestry Commission sites) or abseiling/rock climbing at an activity centre? Or something totally different like a a scuba diving taster session?? Without knowing what he likes its a bit difficult... Main thing is that he has fun and you enjoy watching him. Have a lovely time!
  • If it was me, i would cancel the disco (you can do this yourself easily enough) and look at some other entertainment you could hire in. Depends on your budget really??? And what your son is "into"...? Oh, and how soon is the party???
Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?

Does your sons school have a band? Kids that play guitar etc?
If so invite them to play .. bet half the school would turn up.. worked for me in the past ;)

The Wii competition idea by looneyleo is quite good. Im not sure about the whole disco thing personally, especially as there may only be 8 or so of them, but you never know. I haven't been 13 for a while now.(10 years or so).
Lots of my friends parties at that age were usually something like going bowling and then being treated to burgers and chips, or maybe an indoor football game/tournament if it was all boys.

Do 13 year olds have parties? Imho inviting 40 kids to a party is a bit OTT, they are quite clicquey at that age and probably wont all want to go. Probably better to do an activity with his closest friends rather than a party.

We did a paint ball party when my son was 13 .. only 10 kids replied so his older brother and a few mates came along. 13 year olds had a great day beating the older lads.
13 might be a bit young for a disco thing .. try a paintball day out..
    Good luck

I'd try and cancel the disco (if you can.) I'm not sure if 13 year olds are really into that kind of thing. I know me and my friends weren't, nor were my brother and his friends (and he's still a teen.)

I can't remember exactly what i did. But, i know when me and my brother were around that age lots of people had a bowling party. Maybe something like that? Or, if you have the space, just invite a couple of close friend's over, play video games, watch movies, karaoke e.t.c and order a pizza?

But like others have said, it depends what your son and his friends are into. Hope that helps. Good Luck!
  • Im having the exact same problem, my sons about to turn 13 and hes has aspergers, so doesnt socialise very well. Weve ended up deciding to take him and his 2 close friends to a Laser Zone place, then treating them all to dinner somewhere of his choosing. Hope hes has a lovely day whatever he does :)

    Hi

You will find that most 13 year olds probably won't really be into a party thinking it a bit childish, even a disco at that age may backfire if the kids don't think it is a cool thing to do, I would go for a couple of close friends at a laser quest type place or paintballing, bowling, cinema and out to eat after.

What kind of things have your sons classmates done in the last year or so when it has been their Birthday.

I agree that inviting 40 kids at this age is a bit much as they tend to have formed their own two or three best friends at this age, the kind of blanket invite for the whole class I found tends to stop at about age 9 or so and they prefer to do something with a few friends that they can pick.

I hope that helps a bit

again i agree with what others have said. ours would have hated a disco at that age (now 19 and 16 so not that long ago).

we just used to either do a sleepover with pizza etc or take a few friends to the cinema or for a meal.

    hope it goes well
