That's pretty poor. It's all about how to apply putty to windows and suchlike.

Surely a site like this needs a forum dedicated to household appliances with discrete sub-discussions for the 'majors' like washing machines, TVs and so on..?

Or have we come to a cosy arrangement with 'Which' not to tread on their toes, by any chance..?

I think you'll also find discussions on which washing machine/dishwasher/tumble drier to buy etc.
  • Well, you must have better eyesight than me.

All I can see by way of sub-fora are 'quotes' and 'floods and fire'...

It's not a sub-forum. It's just searching for appropriate thread sin the main In your Home forum.

    For example - washing machines.

    Andrea :)

People are buying appliances all the time and these can go into the hundreds of pounds. If insurance or gardening deserve their own fora, then surely this does. To me it seems to be a major and somewhat mysterious shortcoming in MSE.

I understand what you say... but you are sidestepping the fact that this is a distinct and important subject of its own. Lumping it in with this 'in my home' catch-all is a really poor idea.
  • If you mean the buying part of owning an appliance, then we have the Shop But Don't Drop and Grabbit boards for that.

If it's about owning and running them, then the In My Home board was originally set up for that kind of post, but perhaps could do with a change of title to clarify that.

If it's about eg "I recently bought a washing machine and it has a fault" then that could go on In My Home or the Praise/Vent board, it's entirely up to whoever's posting to decide where they think they'll get the most help.

In the scheme of things, though, I'd say insurance, as in your example, is a much wider subject - most of us need to buy several insurance products a year whereas, we don't have to buy several big appliances every year, hopefully!

Happy to hear more thoughts on it though :)

  • It's very much about 'the latest in x' and 'has anyone any experience of y before I buy it?'

I still think this is an incredibly distinct matter which, as things stand, MSE has perversely managed to disperse over several fora. You have said this yourself and then proceeded to describe the situation as if it were a virtue!!

My analogy with insurance is, the more I think of it, VERY appropriate.

I envisage a forum calling itself Household Purchases (or similar) with separate sections therein for discussing the latest in the various types of appliance. This is very clear and an absolute no-brainer for MSE... or at least it would be if those in charge actually thought about it in an objective way instead of automatically leaping to the defence of the pretty wretched status quo.
