But that was not your call to make, it doesn't matter how long it took him to speak to you the matter is you lied and had the bag in your car.
If that was me I would have told the truth and asked him if he can tell me what was in the bag.
Look at it from all anglesIt's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0 -
Was it just a gift bag or was it a gift bag with something in it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
OP I hope you don't get the sack but what you done to the customer comes across as being personal.
You wrote "i was approached by a very rude customer who asked me in a very irritated manner if i had seen a bag blowing past i was not convinced that the bag belonged to him so i said no"
Did you lie because you didn't like the way he approached you?
Just think about it, customer goes to his car and notices that his gift bag is missing and is worrying were it could be, then perhaps he see's you taking the bag to your car instead of keeping it with you. He asks you obviously in an irritated manner as everyone is different if you saw the bag and because of whatever reason you say no.
Because of whatever reason you made this situation get completly out of hand, now the customer complains and the only physical evidence from the CCTV is you putting the bag in your car leaving the customer open to say you had no intention of handing it in hence you lying. It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0 -

I can see your point - how would the OP have ascertained that the customer was very rude and very irritated in such a brief conversation?0 -

It wasn't your place to make this decision. You made a couple of fairly key mistakes that make you look as guilty as hell. Firstly, putting the bag in your car - you should have taken it straight to the Customer Service desk. Secondly, you lied to the customer. You could simply have said, 'Yes, I found the bag Sir and put it in my car (or took it to the CS desk) fro safekeeping. If you'd like to go to the CS desk they'll be happy to help you'.
In respect of the hearing etc, be honest and hope for the best. It does look bad though, there is no getting away from it.0 -
OP, how long have you been suspended for? It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0

Having sat through a couple of disciplinary hearings all I can offer is; to be honest, admit that what you did wasn't the best course of action and tell them how remorseful you feel. If you have no previous disciplinary items on file then you may just get a written warning for your conduct. Maybe offer to write a personal apology to the customer?0

EdJRobinson, I know you cannot comment on this particular case but is it normal where a customer puts in a complaint against a staff member for them to get suspended?
The reason why I ask is because at my place if a complaint comes in the staff member is asked for a statement at the same time whilst everything is fresh in there mind and depending on the level of complaint there are then suspended or allowed to continue work. It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0 -
Its unusual, that is for sure. I worked in a supermarket for 5 years and I remember one customer complained about a member of staff being rude but they weren't suspended. Statement given a.s.a.p. Then just verbal warning if I remember rightly.
In the case of the OP, I would say the suspension has arisen from the fact the bag was in her car and she denied all knowledge of the bag to the customer originally even though she had the best intentions in mind, just went about it the wrong way.0 -

Thank you for your input I wasn't sure if it was for that reason or because the staff member told him that she didn't think the gift bag belonged to him, I guess this is more serious than I first though. It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0
