Can anybody help with a couple of pc matters?

I have put up with the following for ages- in fact I think from new.

1. Often when the pc and monitor go to sleep, when I move the mouse to wake things up again, the pc light changes colour and makes the right sounds but the monitor doesn't follow. I am then forced to power off the pc and switch on again. Can't be doing it much good.

2. A sound issue. If I watch you tube or video clips, the sound works for a second and then turns off. The only way I can get it to work again is to restart the pc and then if I'm lucky I can play sound ( which is just the monitor sound) without hitch. So something is being reset by restarting.

Pc with windows 7 and monitor is a HP 2159m.

Thank you in advance.

The settings for your monitor going to sleep can be found here:
    Right click on Desktop
    • Click on Personalize
    • Click on Screen Saver
    • In the Window that pops up, click on "Change Power Settings"
    • On the Window that pops up, under the Power Plan that is currently selected, click on "Change Plan Settings"
    • Now click on "Change Advanced Power Settings"
    • Scroll Down and click on "Display"
    • Click on "Turn off Monitor after" and change it to whatever value you like.
When the monitor goes to sleep, all you have to do to wake it up is to move your mouse or press any key on the keyboard.

Secondly, in the control panel/device Manager see if any items have a yellow/red mark against them. If so, then go to the PC manuacturer's webside and re-install the relevant drivers. In fact it is probably a good idea to do this anyway - this applies to both the graphics and audio settings.

There may also be a BIOS update, but try the above first.

Yes, when it all works, this is all that I have to do but far too frequently it doesn't and so without a monitor, I have no option but to force a pc shutdown.

I've reinstalled the monitor drivers. Won't be able to check the monitor sleeping issue but I've just tried a youtube clip and still am getting a second of sound and then just silent picture.:(

What's the BIOS thing you suggested?

Its NOT the monitor drivers that need to be updated, it is the video/graphics driver, these drive the screen, and when the computer wakes should be sending an electrical impulse to the monitor.

Goto the PC manufacturers support site, find your PC model, tell it which version of Windows 7 you have (32 or 64 bit), look at the list for the video/graphics drivers and audio drivers ( if there is a list of more than one for each then come back and we'll resolve that then). Download the files into your win 7 download folder (make a note of the file names so that when complete and you go to this folder, you will know what is what) Then run the driver files, following on screen instrcutions. Do this for both the video/graphics and audio drivers.

BIOS is not for now.....let us review once you have installed the drivers, and tested the sleep/audio issues................

Thanks. That's really helpful. I'll go and try that now.

    Edit:

Was updating the audio driver and it prompted a restart.
Did this and the monitor now won't wake even when I force a reboot on the pc.

The update was realtek HD Audio Driver update.

Not at all what was expected, but does indicate a driver issue (now and before).

Please provide full details of your pc, make model windows version etc so we can see what you have - if it has been upgraded with graphics and/or audio cards also give the model of those too.

also give the details of what/where you get the audio driver from; the url will do.

Can you also try connecting the monitor to your laptop's VGA socket and see if it behaves properly.

I have to go out now for 45 mins but will be back..........
  • Just double check the monitor - your laptop should have a connector for an external monitor. If your monitor cable plug is the same as the laptop then connect it to the laptop and see if it comes on.

I assume that when you turn your PC on you see nothing at all - not even a BIOS/Start up screen.

    Thanks.

I wrote down some details before I started the process.
The pc is a HP pavilion slimline s5210uk.
    Windows 7 is 64 bit
The description of what was purchased at the time: AMD Athlon IIx4 Processor 620 2.6 GHz ATI Radeon.

What I was installing: Realtek HD Audio driver update sp44380.exe
    ( from: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=4032739&lc=en&cc=uk&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=uk)

PC was connected to the monitor ( HP 2159m) via a HDMI lead.

No, nothing appeared on the monitor when I switched the pc on. Monitor displays a no signal message and the light is in orange standby mode rather than blue.

PC makes all the correct sounds as though it's coming on properly and blue light rather than orange if it was in standby/sleep mode. It's now been forced to shut down by me.

    Edit:
I've plugged the monitor into the laptop hdmi socket and it is duplicating the laptop screen so appears to be functioning correctly.

I've tried to connect a small tv to the pc via a vga lead and nothing happens. The tv screen just has the no signal message like with the other monitor.

First things first we should roll back the driver update - first a clean boot, then goto control panel then the device manager and expand the sounds tab, and then clcik on Reatek High Definition Audio, then click on the driver tab, then click on roll back driver. Reboot

Could then on reboot see if this write up addresses your problem:

I'm here for a while going out tfrom 1-3 then back again. let me know................

PS there is no BIOS update for this PC - perhaps there should be..........

I am assuming that you have put yr monitor back, a clean boot is starting from cold - ie turn off the PC then turn it on again.

If the monitor shows absolutely nothing, not even the initial HP /BIOS startup screen, then lets try safe mode, which requires you to repeatedly tap the F8 key at the start of the boot process (till you see the eafe mode menu screen - select safe mode with networking), this effectively loads just the basic Windows system without drivers.

Should allow you to follow the previous process as described earlier, alternatively we could do a system restore. but come back to that if necessary.
