It's quite illuminating to read all these horrible side effects people "persevere through" to quit smoking, when the actual physical withdrawal symptoms of just stopping smoking are so physically painless. I'm genuinely surprised that something like Champix is available on the NHS but the Allen Carr book or clinic session isn't, when the latter has no nasty side effects whatsoever.DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

I gave up a year and a half ago on champix, and I had no memorable side effects. I had tried everything before that, and I was fully convinced I would be a smoker until the day I died. I thought they were great, and I am delighted on a daily basis to be free of the addiction to nicotine!
I also found huge support in this thread. It's very inspiring to read everyone's quit stories.
Best of luck with giving up!I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

I used Champix with no problems at all except for some dodgy dreams.
I have successfully been a non smoker for 2 years now. :jIm an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
I've now managed 4.5 years. Now I just need something to curb my appetite!
I used to live on coffee and cigarettes, unfortunately food took over from the cigarettesThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I gave up using Champix, however about a week after stopping I was crying alot and felt really low, not at all like myself. However whilst reading the horror stories on the internet I came across a link to Allen Carr's book.
I read the book, stopped taking champix and never looked back. Just had my one year anniversary being smober
Combination of both worked for me - I'm not sure Allen Carr would of initially stopped me smoking but taking Champix did. Allen Carr kept me off them though.
Good luck x0 -

It is so easy to make smug comments when you are not the one with an addiction or the one who has managed to quit that adiction,,,

I think what ONW probably means is that virtually everyone is aware of the risks of lung cancer and smoking. But not as near as many people are aware of ailments such as COPD. Whereas lung cancer is almost always a short illness due to its nature, COPD can afflict someone for years. My Dad has both though and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.0 -

When I got married 25 years ago, my husband and I agreed to give up smoking which I managed to do and my husband chose not to. I'm now reasonably healthy whilst he's almost housebound, on oxygen and in the later stages of emphysema.
Unfortunately, people like you think that lung cancer is the only thing to worry about and have no idea of the devastating effects of COPD (emphysema and bronchitis) and other smoking related problems.
I really think you've chosen the wrong person to mouth off at, don't you?0 -
TBH I think most smokers are aware of the related deseases that smoking contributes to including COPD . The Government and NHS have made it pretty obvious in the past 10 years
I am not mouthing off .. I am a smoker and I find your accusation to be more based on your personal circumstances than the thread I am replying to.
I am truly sorry you have had to face this situation and it makes a poigniant point about the relatives of people who suffer illnesses because of smokers who cannot quit
I can understand your point of view regarding smokers ,but please understand that the people who are trying to quit do not need one line answers treating them like lepers or some sort of lesser being because they find it difficult to quit this addiction.0
