Who will check my pubs electric meter?

I`ve got a pub in Wrexham and currently ,according to my bills from BG am using £50 a day electric! We only have, lights, sockets and cellar cooling on electric.BG say the meter is a smart meter and its set up correctly but i`m convinced its wrong. Is there anyone who i can get out to check it or put a meter on it to show where the load is being taken?

    You! (first).
Check the meter reading now, and again in an hour.
Has it increased by ~250 units?
    Repeat same time tomorrow.

Turn off all the switches after the meter, and see if the meter still flashes.
It should indicate almost no draw.

For you to be using 50 quid a day, you need to be using over 60A constantly.
This would only be possible individually on an unusually large circuit designed for fixed loads.

Are you sure you've not got electric heating?
When you find it drawing heavily, turn off each switch after the meter one by one, till it stops. Whatever it is must be on that circuit.

If it does not stop after you turn off all the switches after the meter, it's a fault.
  • what you need is called an 'electrician' they are easy to find, just look at the other side of the bar during normal working hours :)

Turn everything off including your fuse unit, if it still registers you can either have a faulty meter or your fuse unit is faulty. If it doesnt register anymore start turning more things back on.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • Thanks for all your help so far guys.Is anyoone able to look at the reading and see if theres anything unusual?

These are usage figures for a 24 hour period from Friday night to saturday, bearing in mind theres loads of different readings!

Are you on an 'economy 7' or similar tarrif, according to your bill?
What are you paying per unit?
And again - is there electric heating in the property.

235kWh with that breakdown is about £27

Presumably those prices are before VAT @ 20%

However it is just not possible to use 86,000kWh a year for the usage you describe, unless you are supplying power for the Floodlights at Wrexham Football club!

    7,500kWh a month!

Well you have a seriously faulty meter(which is highly unusual) or you are supplying other people.

BG will inspect your meter for a fee(£60?) which will be refunded if the meter is found to be faulty.

It is important to appreciate that electricity(energy) cannot be destroyed(go missing). It will manifest itself as heat somewhere, and an average 40 amp supply(24/7) would generate sufficient heat to burn down your pub in minutes.

However, as suggested above, it really shouldn't be difficult to do some simple checks yourself.
