Motherboard gone again Dell XPS M1330 - CLOSED kindly advised before.

Hi

I posted about this originally in April 2010. Dell XPS M1330. Computer was literally just over 1 year old and the mother board went. CLOSED recommended I get Dell to fix it as no way should this have gone. Fortunately they did. I also remember the engineer saying the motherboard was replaced with a refurbished board.

Because I was worried about this I fortunately took out an extended warranty for two years (runs out in 27 April). No worries Dell are coming out to replace motherboard again free of charge.

My concern here is that Dell are fixing with refurbished parts and the fact that my sons computer is not overused or anything and the motherboard is being replaced again and the computer is only just 3 years old and was very expensive.

When the warrenty runs out end of April should I renew it again? I truly think this is bad - surely a motherboard shouldn't go that often?

Should Dell really be replacing parts which have been refurbished?

Many thanks

  • depends on the woprding of your warranty i suggest. doesn't sound ideal but if its in the T&Cs...

If not however, then certainly not!

If you can't get them to replace the laptop with another one, I would have them replace the motherboard.

Forget forking out more good money on another warranty. It seems this particular laptop is going to keep giving you problems - on that basis I would bite the bullet and get another laptop.

You could always invoke the SOG act? I would agree with the previous poster about yet more warranty. But I would also ask Dell to tell you how long they warrant the replacement part for, apart that is for the next 3 months.........

Well - I think I know the answer to that one!

Whilst booking my call out I asked how much it would cost to to replace the keyboard - son has lost one of the down arrows. I was told £35.00 and no additional cost as the engineer would already be at my house doing the other repair. Thought this was OK - gave my credit card details. Transaction processed - 'then' when I asked how long the guarantee was on the keyboard I was told - 3 months as it is a refurbished keyboard!!!!

I told them to cancel the order and my son can make do.

I'm very disappointed with Dell now.

You would think paying a lot of money for a laptop would guarantee you a decent product.
  • I fail to see what the problem is with refurbished parts. Would you rather have new at three or four times the cost?

Well, I'm not sure you will get the answer you'd like on yr laptop, yes, I agree that you have had a bad experience, really as I said if you do feel strongly you test the SOG act?

Regarding your son's keyboard though, you can usually get spare keys on ebay, just enter your model and "key" and you may well find what you want... Usually they will not only supply the key, but the fixing too.

    here for example: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=dell+keys&_sacat=0&_odkw=sell+keys&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313

If I was claiming under warranty I would expect new parts

    Exactly!

Scenario - brand new car - 2 year warranty - engine blows up - refurbished engine for repair? I bl**ming well should think not.

I honestly can't see why it should be any different for a lap top.

Come to think of it, washing machine was repaired today - 11 months old and still under warranty - this was a brand new part.
  • TBH, if I didn't have so much on my plate at the moment, I think I would go down the SOG route/act. Just don't have the energy at the moment :-(
