Powerline ethernet adapators

Thanks for all the replies.
By an extension i meant cable to connect the plug to the router/pc/ps3, which appears is included in the kit.
My router is in the hallway to use a direct ethernet cable is not practical to connect the computer in the office. Currently use wifi but this is a bit slow. Also wish to connect a smart tV and ps3.
what is the difference between the solwise and TP link kits? which is better?
I guess the difference is in price, but since I haven't done a direct comparison, it would be difficult to say. As Homeplugs come with 6ft ethernet cables, maybe that might be one difference?
You would need one homeplug connected to your router via the ethernet cable provided, probably plugged into the same electrical socket as the router.
The other one would be nearer your kit - if your pc, TV, & PS3 are all close by you can get one of these plugs which have 3 built-in ethernet sockets (like a switch & comes with 3 cables) - My son uses this with a very similar set-up as yours and is very pleased with it - he is using the 85mbps version and is quite satisfied with the streaming/gaming aspects it gives (the adsl line is the limiting factor)

The 85mbps version is £5 cheaper.
Warning though, you can't mix 85 & 200 homplugs for the same ethernet circuit (although you can have separate 85 & 200 circuits running on the same ringmain.0 -
just seen 7dayshop selling their own type for £39.99 triple pack, but photo shows a TP link logo..

does it matter what rates speed you buy for this kit?0 -
Another thought comes to me.
If your 3 boxes at the other end are not close, and you don't want to many homeplugs, wires etc all over the place, you could just have a wireless homeplug, which acts just like an access point - the Homeplug 200 is an all-in-one, but the 85 all-in-one is unavailable so they are offering a bundle at the same price, see here

My ADSL line runs at around 6mbps - so even with an exaggerated 90% degradation on a 85mbps Solwise system you're still going to be restricted by the ADSL line - even Virgin's cable @ 25mbps (max) is unlikely to test it. The 200's are really used for internal LAN networks, ie accessing local servers etc.0 -
I wouldn't go for 85mbps homeplugs, better with 200mbps especially if you are thinking of using them with an smart/internet tv.0

Assuming everything's wireless (and you don't mind it being flakier). personally I just put a little switch behind everything else.0 -

I don't actually agree - you only need an adsl line of upto 8mbps for smart/internet tv - an 85mbps homeplug is more than sufficient to handle this - we comparing 8mbps vs 85mbps.Idiophreak: Assuming everything's wireless (and you don't mind it being flakier). personally I just put a little switch behind everything else.
good point regarding wireless - the tv could be wired in as these plugs do have one ethernet port - but you're right the other two items these would need wireless capability. Wireless is flakier, but no more than any laptop, and well within required tolerances/parameters. Initially misunderstood, okay you meant switch as in hub, yes a good idea too assuming they are close enough together.0 -
guys thanks for all the tips.
Desktop i want to connect to is in one corner of a room. In the other corner i have smart tv and ps3. I could locate a ethernet switch in each corner and suppose just switch the cable between ps3/tv as and when.
so i can buy the 7dayshop triple pack for £39.99
or a TP link twin pack is £34.99 plus £17.99 for another plug.
On price the 7day shop seems reasonable but dont want to buy one that will have old technology after a few years.0 -
As described the triple pack plus one switch - see here http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=ethernet++switch&!!!!!googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=8876527093&ref=pd_sl_e97w6tvo0_b
would do the job (I don't think you'd need a swich on the pc-to-plug link as it should be one-to-one).
With regard to obselence, who can tell? My crystal ball doesn't tell me; no kit works at the max speed indicated, as we know, its a simple fact the longer the line, the greater resistence will reduce speed. However, I can see 85mbps has enough redundancy to cope with the fastest internet speeds we can expect for the forseeable future. If you want a 100% assurance then go for the 200mbps, but I expect things may well change even making that an necessary expense - in the end its your call.
TP-link have a good reputation at the cheaper end of the network market, I don't know anyone who has used this kit, but I believe another poster here is well satisfied. We have been using Solwise here for 4 years now, and tend to use them for installing on client sites - so far we have had to replace two items under warranty to date.0 -
If you use a switch you only need 2 Homeplugs, 1 at the router and one at the switch, just make your your ethernet cables can reach the switch .4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . will probably go for the 200mbhps. on TP link website they show some new adapters with ac power through, meaning i can plug this direct in a socket and still plug in my extension cables etc. Just cant find a retailer who sells this type, so will call them to find out when they are on general sale.0
