Should oil boilers be serviced periodically by law?

Hi all

I've only had an oil boiler for around a year and a half so it is all still relatively new to me....

What I wondered was whether the law states that oil boilers must be serviced once or year (or some other period), or whether this is just a recommendation....

Also, as we use a boiler quite minimally (spend under well under £500 per year) does this mean we need it serviced less often or does it make no difference?

Two other questions:

- should we install a carbon monoxide detector near the boiler?
- are there any websites I should check out to find a good reputable "boiler servicer" in my area. The guy I used last time did not impresser me much!

Cheers

Max

Im pretty sure there is no actual Law that states you must service an oil boiler every year. They only recommend it as oil boilers need it more than gas boilers (can't tell you exactly why). When ours is serviced (its a requirement of our guarantee to service for 5 years) they only change the oil nozzle. He just checks everything else. Takes about 45mins I suppose. We asked all our neighbours who they used and so get a recommendation that way. Anyway, Id rather pay £70 a year to have it serviced rather than leave it and be hit with a big bill that could have been prevented by us having it serviced. Sorry can't help on your other points.

No. Gas yes - oil, no.
  • Gas yes
Yes for a landlord, but can you give a link to where it says that for other individuals.

There is no legal requirement to service a gas boiler.

The only legal requirement is for a landlord to get a gas boiler inspected for safety not serviced.
