EDF increased my DD from £54 to £172 per month!! HELP!

I put in the new meter readings to EDF just after midnight, and today got the bill with the DD changed again. So I phoned EDF (no wait this time) to reset the DD.
This time the tale was that if you are on a DD then you should only submit readings every 6 months because the system recalculates the DD after every meter reading (which is what we all knew, but they are now saying it) - and that if we want to submit meter readings every month we should move off the DD tarrif !!!0 -
We take our own meter readings every month and pay for exactly what we have used, it's easy to set up the formula (see your bill) on a spreadsheet, and we now ignore all their bills, having advised them what we are doing. Re water they have no right to insist you pay over 10 months, so we take all year, bonus is that it mucks up their accounts sytem - What a shame!!0

I have madly gone back to EDF as the price plan was fixed for 12 months, and I had to go onto monthly DD which I hate. Your money is never your own. Am duel fuel and the monthly charge matches my annual consumption with my previous provider, details which they EDF wanted. OK with it so far. 1st month payment comes out albeit pennies less than I expected on my bank statement, so I rang and asked why different to their letter they had sent, some twoddle excuse was given so I told them to round it up as agreed. Next communication in e-mail saying putting up by £10. Sent email back saying they were not to make the change, when the long awaited e-mail back came said it about me having beenincontact with them would be the same as previous. Remember here I REALLY dont like doing DD's. Low and behold they take out the increase, my balance was nil. Now I have rung them again asked for their sort code and bank account and will pay Standing Order.
The advisor told me I will loose my 6% discount... like I am bothered at this time, cheaper than them causing me banking charges when I dont have any grrrr
This week extra payment

But they cannot change your DD without advising you in advance-you can then query it if necessary. You know therefore exactly how much they will take, and the date they will take it, so you can make sure that sufficient funds are present.
Using an SO is just throwing away your DD discount and won't prevent potential bank charges, that's typically wasting £75pa.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
One tip that I discovered via issue with Eon DD last year is to try to only submit meter readings just after your DD has been received. I made the "mistake" of submitting a reading the day before my DD was received last year and that automatically generated a bill which showed a significant underpayment (winter quarter with one DD payment missing ... as it would arrive a few hours after the bill was issued) which triggered a DD recalculation to recover the missing amount over the next 3 DDs. On the positive side a quick call to Eon on receipt of this bill got them to reissue it with the "missing" DD now included which resulted in a more sensible DD !0

Just checked my Eon online account to see the bill they've just calculated .... and as I'm still in credit (after most of winter) my DD has just been reduced by ~35%! Think I'll still be credit at the "spring review" in May as well.
(N.b. DD I think was set at the correct amount according to previous years usage but over past year we appear to have reduced gas usage by ~20% ... perhaps my message of "if its cold, put a jumper on" is getting through!)0 -
Just phoned EDF about my DD going up from £63 to £98 but no joy - by their calculations they've estimated I'll use more this forthcoming 12 months than I did last year, even though the adviser actually said she could see on the system that I've used the same gas as last year. So the upshot is they are leaving the DD at the revised amount of £98 which means like so many others, I'll officially be in fuel poverty.
Needless to say, I've got my annual kWh consumption and I'll be trawling the comparison sites for a better deal, so fingers crossed I can get one.0 -

If you believe you have a case (and even if you don't) you have recourse to the Edf complaints process. Demand all the figures the calculation is based on in full compliance with SLC27.14...
27.14 The licensee must provide to each such Domestic Customer an explanation in clear, plain and intelligible language of the basis upon which a fixed amount (and any variation of that fixed amount)has been determined.0
