Thanks yeah I have decided to keep it simple, eg 3 lines swirling around or something nothing to fancy but I don't want it to look cheap
I had a look at GIMP I couldn't get it to work:(0 -

Take a look at inkscape and google tutorials for it.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
Go to pixlr.com/editor - it's a similar program to photoshop (more basic though) and it's all done through your browser so you don't have to download a program.0

I would go for a professional one - you might have to live with a logo for a long time, and your designer will work on your ideas and offer options, then send you the logo as suitable for a variety of uses.
I paid £100 for mine, worth every penny.0 -
Hi, I used Vistaprint for logo design. Very basic but I am a smaller than small business making handmade cards so really didn't want to spend much. It cost about £15. Also means you can use the logo for business cards and other log'd stuff from their website. Hope that helps.0

Beware when using such companies for logo design (not sure on vistas T&C so you would need to check) but you need to make sure you have the copyright for the logo. If you don't you will have to use that company for anything you want to produce with that logo on it.
If you don't own the copyright or a sufficient license you can't even add it to your own printed materials or use another supplier for business cards, leaflets, mugs etc. It may be cheap to begin with but you could end up paying through the nose to get that image released to you.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
You might also want to define colours used with an actual colour palette number so designers can match these when you create newer versions or different styles, otherwise you could end up with a hotchpotch of different shades.0

There used to be a good free program called xara3d which might do what you want. Its been years since I used it though....
I'll happily knock you one up in photoshop, for the cost of a couple of beers if you like it!0 -
Hmmm, looks like Xara3d costs now. How about one of the free online logo creators eg... http://cooltext.com/0

LOL you would be better with a notepad and pen, then scan it in.
If your going to create a logo for one medium, i.e a business card then pretty much anything will do. If you are going to create a logo which you intend to use for various mediums then you need to do it properly from the outset.
The link above would be totally useless for anything other than a webpage or a business card. If you tried to use one of those for a banner say you will have to pay to get it remade, which will probably cost you more than having it done properly to begin with.
I charge far more for having to redraw a logo/image from a low quality image than I do for just designing a new one from scratch, which would be scalable without any loss.
Think about what you intend to do with the logo in the future not just what you intend to do with it now, saving a few quid now could cost you twice as much further down the road, not very moneysaving.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0
