Three Mobile - APPARENTLY I owe them money

Hi guys/girlies - I'm new here and after some advice, if at all possible.
I have never, ever, been a customer of Three mobile.... however, I recently received a letter from them stating I owe them £168 from a mobile I apparently took out 5 years ago.
I have never taken a mobile out with them and this is the first I have heard (they say they have been trying to track me, even though I have lived here 6 years).... apparently I took the phone out and then cancelled it 1 day after the cooling off period and incurred cancellation charges.
I have stated I know nothing off this and they need to show me some evidence, the only thing they have provided is a statement showing cancellation charges - apparently they don't have to provide anything else.
This is just going around in circles now and I was wondering if anyone else has been in this situation and if there is any advice on how to resolve it.
Thanks
M

Usually it is debt collectors that deal with the debts after five years, not the original companies. This may explain the lack of the proofs they have.
Generally, you can just ignore them, but the main problem is likely to be your credit file(s) where this default is almost definitely shown. That said, if it was recorded 5 years ago, it will stay for just about a year more.0 -
Id they're chasing you for money it's for them to prove you owe the money, a singed agreement, for example. Unless they can provide adequate proof a contract was taken out in your name how can they enforce the debt!?
Scary thought, but could it possibly be identity theft?0 -
Thanks for advice.
Three Mobile have now stopped writing to me and passed it on to llowell - I have prepared a letter stating that I am not aware of the debt, any contract etc and that unless adequate proof is received I will be referring them to FSA.
Let's see what happens.0 -
I would also add that you reserve your right to seek legal redress through the courts for harassment and any subsequent losses caused by placing default notice on any credit file, that the debt is expressly denied, you have no contract with 3 network and never had.
In the absence of production of any contract the matter is closed.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Really glad I've found a network 3 thread, cos I have big problems! Briefly, I've been diagnosed with relapsed cancer, and I'm going to be in and out of hospital indefinitely, so my mobile phone is my lifeline to the outside world. Knowing this, I called 3 to ask to change my plan - no problem. My new plan would start on 2nd February. (Still about 3 weeks to go at that point, but hell, I didn't know I was going to be ill did I??). What can I do until then?? Well you can buy an add-on. Good, I'll have one.....oh sorry, no you can't, because you've just changed your price plan - you'll just have to pay full whack. Last week my phone was stopped from sending outgoing texts and calls. When I rang them, they said they couldn't start again until I'd paid the outstanding amount of £78 on my card. I had no choice, so I paid. Last time I looked I owe them roughly another £50, and this is using the phone as little as possible. I made a complaint in which I asked for a rebate on compassionate grounds. Refused. I asked the customer service "person" what they would do if I died before the contract was up - contact a lawyer and get it that way. Good aren't they. Apparently - and I wasn't clear about this - I still have a year to run on the contract. When I asked to be released before that time, I was told no problem, as long as I pay them £200. My husband is going to have to give up work to become a full-time carer, and I am a pensioner. Please, has anybody out there got any advice?0
