I live in a three story terraced house......I have three neighbours on both sides.....thats six neighbours! I hardly hear a thing..even with the TV off ...Maybe its because its Devon.;) I moved nearly 9 years ago...because of bad neighbours...from Essex. Life is bliss at the moment.:D

We bought a brand new terraced house, we questioned the builder on what sound proofing they had put in as we would have ideally liked a semi but couldn't get one in our price range.

I have to say the noise proofing between the houses is excellent, our next door neighbour has a 'music room' with drums, guitar etc and when he is practicing the most you hear is a very dull base - as soon as you go out the front it is quite loud so the sound proofing must be quite good.

I am not sure if all builders are the same, but ours seems to build to quite a high standard.

We have lived in older rented properties before and the noise between flats was terrible, even being able to make out which programmes the neighbours were watching.

In a modern semi i can hear the phone ringing next door (I always think it's my phone then realise it's not) and I can hear the dogs barking. It doesn't happen very often so it's not a problem. That's all i can hear. They probably hear a lot more from here with 2 boys. :o

When i lived in an old terrace i could hear one neighbour shouting at her son and her having sex (not at the same time). The other side i'd only hear when they were standing outside saying a very loud goodbye to their families.
  • I live in a housing association house built in 1992. One side i can never hear even though she has two toddlers. The other side even though she doesn't work insists on hoovering every day at 8pm .Just as i'm settling down for the night . She puts her hifi on at 10pm it's ok for her she doesn't need to get up for work at 6am It's not quiet either you can hear each song perfectly she even has the same Queen albumn as me lol . Mostly though it's that dreadful drum and base. On Sat it starts at 2pm and goes on till nearly 10pm again. I wouldn't be surprised if her little boy grew up deaf He's only 5 so can't be doing his sleep pattern any good listening t the hifi that late at night.
  • Live in a 1800's victorian mid terrace, each wall single brick to the next house. Left side the guy is quiet, I have lived next to him for ten years. Right side my lovely neighbour moved out in 2007 and i got a loud mouthed earring wearing neighbour with three grown kids aged from 13-20 who stay over with him sometimes. He has a girlfriend and you can hear them having sex in the bedroom, living room, but its mostly her you can hear. I told them about keeping it down but they ignore the request.
He talks loud, hes put wood flooring in the house so I can hear every footstep and banging door. Bangs the kitchen cupboards against my wall. Now one of his daughters has got a baby, but thats pretty quiet when she stays over with baby. years ago when he first moved in I had to get police out because he would leave his daughter having parties in the house while he stayed at his girlfriends. Cant stand him. Im hoping one day he will move in with girlfriend.

But I still love my house and Im not moving.:rotfl:

Many years ago I was renting a semi with friends and we could hear next door's, erm, loud acrobatics... They were absolutely refusing to accept that we could hear them so next time they were at it we all trooped into one room and started a very loud live commentary of the activities, complete with cheering, clapping and request for an encore... They were *much* quieter after that :rotfl:

The three bed next door, we hear very little from, even though they have a baby (we do hear occassional crying). The two bed on the other side? We hear EVERYTHING! Screaming at the child, the child screaming back, the alarm clock, the light switches, the bed creaking (not that sort of creaking thankfully!), and my favourite, the obsession with doors. The sit in her bedroom most of the evening so all we hear for most of the night is errrkkkk (door opening)....bang! (door shutting).... thump, thump, thump down the stairs....errkkk (kitchen door opening)....bang.... thump, thump, thump..... I think you get the picture! I think most of the problem is that the whole house is laminated and she doesnt have soft furnishings (rugs, curtains etc) to absorb the noise.

We used to live next door to a Geordie couple who were both obsessed with the tune "Crocodile Shoes" by Jimmy Nail .... For almost a year they used to play it at full volume at least 6 times a day whilst both singing really loudly at the same time .. First of all it was quite amusing, but it didnt take long for us to stop seeing the funny side!! .. Thankfully for us, the fella decided to leave his wife for another woman and peace and quiet followed, only for her to then have an obsession with Johnny Cash and Ring of Fire

For most of the last 6 years lil man and I have been in downstairs 1960's council flats - complete nightmare! You can hear everything from upstairs from playing to arguing to shagging - OMG it was awful!

4 months ago (lucky lucky us - still can't believe it!) we moved into an end terrace new build HA house - less than 12 mths old, our very own stairs and back door! :)

The only noise we get now, and it is very occasional is the clanging of pots from the kitchen - absolute sheer bliss!
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

I had a noisy neighbour upstairs when I first moved into my old flat - loud telly, loud banging of furniture, hammering at all hours, I would speak to them and they would nod then start it up again. One day I got fed up and put my stereo speakers on top of the wall unit facing up and treated him to a mix of thrash metal, punk and reggae. When he came down to complain I told him it was no worse than what I put up with from them and I would be doing it regularly unless they kept it down, hardly heard a sound out them for the next ten years.
