When I was at school we all changed in the classroom and we used to do PE in our vest and pants. I don't remember it being a problem.

You are either male or maybe you didnt reach puberty as early as my DD?? Being 10 with boobs and periods is no fun when you just want to be like your friends...

I must of had something wrong with me then, i was a late starter and i was about 13.

BUT it's not so much as getting my facts wrong, i never had girls, didn't have any sisters or close friends at that age, and a mother who refused to discuss things down there till i was about 13.

Not being a problem for someone else is irrelevant and really means nothing.

It's good that the teacher was willing to take on board the concerns and will try to accommodate pupils feelings with stuff like this.

I'm glad it worked out. :)

    An update....
Been in to speak with my DDs teacher and she was lovely. She said that she even feels a little awkward with the boys getting changed in front of her and she doesnt know where to look! She is a nan bless her.
The other year 5 teacher is a man and she is going to have a word with him to see if all the boys can go in his classroom next door to change and she has all the girls. Makes sense.
She said if that doesnt happen then she has given my DD permission to go and change in the toilets, although that really does single my DD out so I really hope the first option is reached.
    So a positive meeting :T

    Glad to hear it!

i work in a primary school - at that age the boys get changed in the cloakrooms and the girls in the classroom or vice versa!

I suppose the problem is to do with both space and teacher numbers. At my kids school - a small village school of only 60 + kids there are only 3 class rooms so no spare room to change in. Also the classes are mixed ages so the thrid class has all year 4 and 5 and 6 in it -so some of the girls will be reaching puberty - but i don't really know what the school in this case can do as there is no other place to change....

my kids will be in this class next year so i will now try and think of a solution as i does worry me ...

i hope the OP finds a solution and thanks for highlighting this problem.

  • I allow the girls in my Y5 class to get changed in the cloakrooms (which are screened from the corridor) or the loo, while my boys (who can't be trusted to change sensibly!) stay in the classroom with me. The boys don't care, but the girls definitely do by Y5.

My daughter goes to a new school which is lucky enough to have 'spare' classrooms and yet they still have to get changed in a mixed classroom. When I was at school things were the same, but you would have thought things might have changed for the better in 20 odd years, especially as they have plenty of room.

Thinking back to middle school there were two girls who used to change in the toilets. I wonder if their mums had complained.
  • In my son's school ( and quite a few other schools about the area) the children come into school wearing their jogging bottoms and trainers on the days where they have PE. No changing - no problem. Helps that their school uniform is polo shirt, sweatshirt and trousers/skirts.

Maybe something to suggest to Board of Governors if no alternative?

I have never actually thought to ask why the little ones don't use the changing rooms tbh,:o perhaps in case some of them need extra help.

At the primary school my kids went to they got changed in their classrooms in the infants and had to fold their clothes and put them on their chair so they wouldn't get them mixed up.
In juniors they had 2 classes for each year group so boys changed in one room and girls in the other when they got to year 5.
In an ideal world there would be separate changing rooms but schools have to use the facilitites they have and it's not always possible but as kids are more aware these days something does need to be done.

in my sons school the girls go into the cloakroom to get changed and the boys stay in the classroom. It seems a pretty good solution as the loos are right next to the cloakroom so if any of the girls need to go to the toilet to sort any leaks or whatever out they can nip in without anyone really noticing.
