So if they every single customer switched to for arguments sake Scottish power and left British Gas with no customers do you not think BG would reduce prices to gain back customers? extreme example maybe.

Well let's take your example a little further:

1 Every customer has switched to Scottish Power and forced BG to drop their prices.

    2. They now all switch to E.On and force Scottish Power to drop their prices.

    3. Then to NPower etc etc

    4. Then to OVO etc

    5. Then Southern etc

    6. After going round every company - back to BG

    7. Repeat Steps 1 to 6

Depends what deal you are on and how happy you are with BG.
If you are on one of their online deals then you arent too far off paying the cheapest, depending on your usage.

Sometimes it is worth an extra couple of pounds a year if you are happy with your company and the arrangements that you have with them.

I personally dont mind that i am not on the cheapest tariff, as long as it is competitive.

I've heard that the majority of energy customers never switch supplier! I find that amazing, but then I think there is the idea it's very hard to compare (correct until the price comparison sites came along) and the excessive selection of tariffs probably put people off. How and why does my gas and electric company offer the same product, gas and electricity, in so many different prices and packages. A lot of this I believe is allowed in the name of competition, but frankly it's driving a lot of people I suspect in to confused inertia so they stay on overprices tariffs for years.

I went into M and S the other day and was stopped by a man trying to get me to sign up to their energy. I told him that every time I do it, I end up cancelling it as when I sit down and compare the actual price (I don't carry around my tariff info with me) it is ALWAYS more with them. He assured me that this was not the case this time and promised he would save me money as their tariff would be cheaper. So, I signed up, went home, called up my supplier for the breakdown of tariff charges they were charging and did a comparison. Surprise, surprise, M and S were over £250 MORE EXPENSIVE than my current supplier so I immediately called them and cancelled it. It makes me really angry that companies bombard you with misleading information - I made it clear from the outset what my tariff name was and that he didn't have the figures with him as he only had the standard ones. I really don't understand how there can be so many tariffs for a product - when I want to use an appliance in my house, I plug it in and expect electricity to work it, so how can that cost different amounts within the same company? I can understand competition between companies, but within the same company does not make sense - unless it is of course to confuse the customer and hoodwink them into paying more than they need to. Surely a supplier can have a single tariff, they factor in their desired profits, and then charge the consumer. Why should it cost a different amount for the same product?

What annoys me is that almost the first thing the caller says is did you know you are paying to much for your gas and electricity.

    How do they know that?
They can't because you can't even go by a simple unit charge. There are different computations including quite often energy supplied at different rates for different bands of usage. Heck my supplier has a zillion tariffs and it's difficult enough comparing those.
They had a mastermind champion on TV recently trying to make sense of it. So I'm not about to try to go into it in a telephone call with a stranger who rung me up with an agenda. Ditto for the middle of a supermarket.
There's also lots of small-print to go into like when and how your deal and the deal on offer ends. Plus customer service, ease of billing etc. There are two companies I have previous negative experience with (mainly from when I was a sheltered housing warden) and they can offer me pie in the sky - I still won't use them.

I also think that the bulk of people that dont change is more to do with the generation they were brought up in.

And by this i dont mean to be ageist of offensive in this post, im just saying it how i see it.

How many people are still with the default supplier - BG for gas and Local Elec Board for elec?

This is in my opinion people being content with status quo. They have spent the larger part of their life not having to worry about switch companies so why start worrying now.

They probably havent even spoken to their suppliers for years, and only need to ring someone when something goes wrong.

You are probably quite correct, and it is also that

1/ they dont want the hassle, as can clearly be seen from the problems posted on this forum

2/ they want the truth and the facts, which from the problems also posted here is a problem and the salesman is only interested in his bonus

3/ and most importantly the older genration are not necessarily computer literate or can afford the costs of a PC to do what will be necessary, and probably even less interested when they hear from people of the bad experiences!

As I said in a previous post, we are all supposedly equal but the companies themselves create inequality due to ability, that is not fair!!!
