Having to pay more for anything could increase debt - why not put it on every board going?Giving up is easy...... just keep on trying!0 -

The area around me is made up of a lot of villages and a lot of the buses have been withdrawn due to the economics of running half empty buses, bus company cannot make a profit, to h*ll with those that need to get anywhere!!
I am slightly better off in that if I need to go to the city (20 miles away) the buses run approx every 1 and half hours apart and take an hour and half to get there.
I do actually need my car and will have to find the money somehow even though we are living on disability benefit.
My OH often gets rushed to hospital and I have to travel the 20 odd miles to take any medication to him that may have been forgotten in the rush (hospital are very reluctant to supply and don't always carry the right ones) and I have to pick him up and bring him home (thats without any visiting). His condition would make it impossible to bring him home on public transport due to safety, this also applys when he has his regular hospital appointments.
I do not have the magic answer to solve the problem, but a much better public transport system would go a long way to helping. The only problem then would be, who would fund it? I doubt the bus companies would be willing to soak up the costs of the loss making routes and I think there would be another public outcry if the government used public funds for it.

Agree with everything you've said there. I ditched my car about 6 years ago and havn't given it a second thought since. I don't live in London, I live in a small town on the coast (most easterly town in Britain so it's furthest away from everywhere) with a very bad public transport system. I moved nearer the town centre so I wouldnt have to rely on the rubbish bus service into town. I'm in a long distance relationship with my b/f and have been tooing and froing 360 miles every other week for two and a half years and have another 18 months to go before he can move here. But after all that I would never get another car.GreyPilgrim wrote:I tend to agree. Whether the practicalities have been thought through is another matter but should we not at least debate this idea first before dismissing it as out of hand? You have to laugh at how people wring their hands about health, obesity, air pollution, carbon emissions but as soon as an idea to get people out their cars actually threatens THEM personally they bring the burning torches out and start saying their civil liberties are being infringed
I walked to work one morning a few years ago because my bus was cancelled. 50 minutes there and back and it cleared my head so much I did it every morning. People looked at me like I was some sort of deviant for WALKING so much..."BUT THATS LIKE...MILES!!!"
We are SO dependant on cars now that the thought of breaking into a sweat terrifies us.
I know that everyone with a car will come back with a barrage of reasons why they need theirs, and I reckong 10% will be geniune. The rest will be laziness.
Ditch the cars. You'll add years to your life.

Both my husband and I are self employed and need to use our vehicles for work, without them we would not be able to go to work as we both work in all areas of our county and public transport or cycling or walking is not an option for us.PAYDBX 2020 - #01 Pd £15,029.29 / £13,140.66 - 114% 🎉

I support making changes we cannot put our heads in the sand on motor cars - we cannot go on as present ; those who use most such as business drivers and contractors should pay more than the poorer groups; Ken has improved London no end especially reducing pollution from constant traffic and having a decent bus service; other countries like Holland , France and Germany can go foward with a good rail and bus network but never the UK stuck in its petty, anti-taxation, narrow minded, downward , selfish, anti-social spiral; the countries that come out top for life style and happy kids and happy families are never UK but Holland and Sweden and France. People who oppose reforms are King Canutes; oblivious to Global Warming, dangers to Kids. I am glad I did not sign the petition.0
