water saving

  • Greetings all,

I recently fitted a water meter. I got a plumber in to change my flush from the old 9 litre to new 6 litre type. While here I asked if he had any tips on saving cash by saving water. From this I now have a basin in my bathroom sink. When I dispose of this water I throw it down the toilet to reduce the number of times I need to flush the loo.

Free water saving devices are available from Thames Water and other companies
Its helps the environment and also saves money if you are on a water meter .

The hippo bag is a bag that fits into your toilet cistern reducing the amount of water used per flush with out affecting the efficiency.

The "save a flush" is a plastic bag containing crystals that swell when submerged in water and takes up some of the room in the toilet cistern so that when it refills it doesn’t use as much water, this device saves 1 litre of water per flush.
They are also really easy to install

Always worth saving water, but truthfully it is probably less hassle to put a brick in your cistern (or half a brick if space/water displacement is excessive), or indeed any other suitably heavy and small item you might have laying about!

Also kinder to the environment to boot - old bricks are already about - no doubt any manufactured device supplied new will have a carbon footprint (even if only in the post!).
  • Received my Hippo from Yorkshire water, now in the cistern. Also marigold seeds, which require minimum watering. In Zimbabwe always used a half brick and was horrified at the amount used to flush when we first came here. Also had a meter installed. After a year I could opt to continue with it or return to a bill based on rateable value. Nice to have the choice. I save £174.00 each year.
