My daughter was diagnosed 11 months ago (22nd February 2010) age 17 just a day away from suffering irreversible organ damage from DKA. She started on 3 injections a day, went back into hospital with DKA again in March and came out on the MDI regime.

She has taken it in her stride. I really worry about her sometimes because she gets rather blase about it, especially when she is out drinking. She has passed her driving test (on the third attempt), she drives her friends around now rather than drinking herself.

She doesn't worry about testing and injecting now. She has never been really self conscious about it. We went out for a meal the other day. She forgot to inject and remembered while we were standing in a queue to get a key cut. She injected there and then!!! She says that if people want to stare they can!!

We still have bad days but they are mostly because she is so disorganised. She regularly misplaces her test kit, her emergency supply or her insulin pens for a short time. Luckily we have plenty of spares.

Firefly - insulin injections are sub-Q not IM. There is a difference.

Re Chewynuts post, please note that you never inject insulin into veins. All injections are intramuscular and go into subcutaneous tissue.

From what I've been told, he was trying to get blood out, not get insulin in. The poor guy had been on his shift for over 24 hours and was very lovely, putting all the special cream on and drawing smiley faces on the plasters but it just wasn't happening.

I can't actually remember it but that's what my phobia has been put down to because nobody can think of anything better.

Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!
