has anyone got any tips or advice for getting sky sports free or much cheaper than what sky charge at the moment? i only want it for the F1 when that starts and i'm gutted that i have to pay so much each month when i wont use it for the rest, is there a secret package that they don't advertise or anything? i've been with sky for years, should i tell them i'm going to leave? will they give me a deal then? what if it back fires? i don't really want to leave sky!
any tips please

I've had the same problem for years - I want ONLY PDC darts, but refuse to pay Sky Sports for a whole bunch of stuff I don't want.

Using the internet, there will probably be a variety of Arthur Daley methods, but here are some legal ways:

    (a) going around to a friend to watch it (who has Sky Sports F1)
    (b) go to the pub and watch it (buying a half is cheaper than a monthly Sky sub)

    (c) consider investing in a one-off sat system that gets you the race from German TV - commentary in German though. A cheap and cheerful digital sat system from ALDI or LIDL (even the camping set) would do and tune it to RTL at 19.2 east.

I refuse to pay Sky Sports subscription prices.

  • You won't get it for free from Sky. What package are you on at the moment?

Do you pay the HD sub?

You will be able to listen to Radio Five on Freeview, Freesat, Sky or DAB at the same time to get English commentary.

I recently came accross a website that show's pretty much every sport for free / no registering etc. It wasnt hard to find but the quality isnt great. I assume it is dodgy though.

I also refuse to pay for Sky sports so I go down the pub. I expect it works out more expensive but at least I am getting out and socialising!

It'll cost an extra £10.25 for the HD pack, and that will get you the F1 channel. you DO NOT need the Sports pack to get the F1 channel. Thanks for the laugh though about getting channels for free from Sky!
  • The word 'free' does not appear in the $ky vocabulary!

With Sky you pays your money and takes your choice. If a person doesn't like paying for it, then don't do it - simple.

I decided a long time ago to invest in a decent satellite dish which gets me German TV off 19.2 East and often mux sound from that with bbc radio commentary - which is a little out of sync, but I can live with it. I bought one of these: http://www.wavefrontier.us/

Ok, it took a little time setting up, but it was a one-off payment of about 140 Euros at the time, and I have had it 8 years now and get a lot of what is on Sky Sports on German TV for free - PDC Darts on SPORT 1, German Eurosport for Snooker. All legal and above board and I can have Sky alongside if I want.

It really depends what sport you want - I am not a football fan - but compare a 1 off investment of 140 Euros against an average 40 pounds a month for 8 years for a Sky Sports subscription = 3840 GBP.

For me, Sky's model is (and always has been) wrong if you are only into one or two sports and not into football - why should I pay for all the Premier League when I am only into e.g. Darts, Table Tennis or Badminton ? I see a dedicated F1 channel has popped up now, but they should have done this year's ago, offering you a choice of picking and choosing individual sports you would like to watch, even on pay for view.

I am not bashing Sky here, because on the whole, even for Premier League I would say it is cheaper to watch your team week in week out than it would be to travel to the ground and have a pie. That said, their model is wrong, they have a monopoly which is also wrong and too many people out there think Sky is the only satellite option, which of course it isn't.

As internet speeds up I am beginning to wonder if satellite TV has had its day really - IPTV is far more convenient to a lot of people and will only get more popular as time goes on - hence the obvious "illagal" alternatives, which I am not going to mention here of course.
