Help with swapping broadband

Hi, I've been looking into changing my broadband and phone. I currently have Orange broadband (which I've had for years). My package is £18.37 a month for broadband only. For this I get 1 meg speed with 2 gig cap with USB modem. It also says my estimated speed is 14.0 Meg. My phone is with BT and to my horror I've just realised I'm paying £47.50 per month (£14.50 line rental)!

I'm not particularly unhappy with Orange but I wanted to change so I could combine broadband and phone to save some money.

I was looking at moving to BT Infinity or Sky but after reading reviews in this forum I'm totally confused as they both seem to have lots of issues.

I do use the internet a lot but mostly for browsing, not streaming films etc. I'd appreciate any advice anyone can give.

I hope I've given enough information.

Many Thanks

Sam

  • £18.37 per month is a lot these days considering what you're getting at the moment. For example Plusnet are offering "Value Broadband and Anytime Calls" from £6.74 per month for the first year and line rental from £9.49 if you agree to pay it (line rental) all in one go. You are also allowed a maximum of 10GB downloading per month.

TalkTalk have a similar deal and their download limit is a lot more than 10GB. But the downside is that they have won the "Wooden Spoon Award" for the past two years.

    MrHappy2, thanks for your response.

I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest Broadband, just cheaper that I'm paying now for broadband and phone.

I'd already been warned about Talk Talk as my sister was with then and had nothing but trouble.

I'm just looking for something that's quite quick, reliable and cheaper than I'm already paying.

    Thanks

  • Hi, I work for O*ange BB & Home Phones. Could you not switch your landline over to them as well? Up to 20meg speeds, unlimited BB and if you are currently happy with the service, why not stay?

Total cost for BB & home phone with free anytime calls is around £28 a month including line rental (sorry i dont know exactly, my job doesn't have anything to do with pricing), and around £5 cheaper with just off peak calls.

Plus if you already have a BT landline, there's no charge for an engineer visit to install a new line as there won't be one needed.

OP, check the LLU services that are available at your exchange using the Samknows exchange search.

Thanks metalfirecracker_, I'll look into the deals Orange are offering.

Thanks Penrhyn, I've checked Samknows.com and it came up with the following:

Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area.
click here to compare packages available to you. However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.

The following services are available in your location:
    • BT Wholesale ADSL
    • BT Wholesale ADSL Max
    • BT Wholesale WBC (21CN)
    • BT Wholesale SDSL
    • BT FTTC
    • AOL LLU
    • O2 / Be LLU
    • Bulldog LLU
    • TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
    • Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
    • Tiscali LLU
    • Virgin Media (Cable)
I don't really understand what this all means.

Can someone please explain a bit further?

    Many Thanks

Your best bet would probably be Sky.
Unlimited broadband and talk £10 / month, line rental £12.25.
    LLU Local loop unbundling.

£2.50 / month discount if you have Sky TV.

Those are the LLU options available on your exchange. As above, but you might also look at O2, especially if you can register an o2 mobile no. to give you the £5pm discount.
