... I dont know how I would prove my hours if the wtc asked though.

That's what those who post about WTC compliance issues with the HMRC struggle with.

Take meticulous records of how you spend your time - diary all your trips, purchases, posting times, craft fare travel and attendance time.

The HMRC are asking recipients of WTC who are self employed who they are investigating to provide proof of time spent, not just basic financial records.

You need to be very business like as there seems to be quite a push now, unsurprising given the amount of times posters say to benefit claimants 'oh, just start up a bit of ebay trading, its easy and it'll catapult you into WTC' ..
  • thanx for the replies. daft question but could i make the hours up with overtime? i used to do regular overtime on a sunday which pays time and a half. i don't know what the overtime situation is like at the moment though. i'm not work shy, just looking for a plan b.

I've been making up the 8 hours (I've already started) by going round charity shops in 4 different towns on my day off. Starting at about 9.30am and ending at around 3pm. Then coming home and scouring eBay for wholesale vintage/costume jewellery. Then booking a table at a craft fair or antique Market every Saturday to sell it. You can charge double what you paid for a piece of vintage jewellery at one of these events. I dont know how I would prove my hours if the wtc asked though.

If you are doing this though, buying to sell, they could be cross referencing you, re declaring your income for tax purposes.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Can you not do voluntary work? and get the establishment to sign off on the hours provided?

Tax credits are for renumerative work.

Could you get 8 hours at another job, couple of nights in a pub or hotel.

Yes because it is so easy to just find another job these days. Some people can be so ignorant at times

It's not easy, so there's no point trying?

Definately very tricky to get work - hardest it's been for years and very difficult to juggle two part time jobs without conflicts.

However, I am optimistic that the majority of those receiving WTC as couples for 16 hours will increase their hours to 24, motivated by the potential loss of it, even if they have to be entreprenurial and set up a micro business via self employment, such as a cleaning round, dog walking, avon round and so on.

For example, my sisters company struggles to find staff to work overtime at peak periods or transfer from part time to full time employment if they receive tax credits (they won't work a minute over 16 hours) so I expect she'll welcome staff approaching her for extra hours for a change.
