Contract Up- Time to Renew!

Hi There

I was wondering if someone could give me a bit of advice. I am coming to end of my contract with Orange (I pay £20.50 per month at the moment)

I would like to leave them as I have found their service woeful in the past year (I have been with them for 10 years which really counts for nothing it seems with them) and if there is better, I am ready to jump!

A few questions- if I did leave them, can I take my number with me (my apologies if this is obvious,I genuinely have no idea!)

After having had a blackberry for the last few years, i have decided to buy an Iphone-are there any contract deals whereby I can have bought the iphone and I pay say around £20 for a text/ unlimited internet bundle (or if someone could point to where I would begin to look for deals that would be great too)

Thanks in advance for any help- hope this makes sense!

Yes you can keep your number. You can ask for a PAC code from Orange. Yes you can buy an iPhone 4S for 499 at apple.com/uk/store. Then you can get these sim onlys in store at 3 http://store.three.co.uk/SIM_Only/Voice_Pay_Monthly and http://store.three.co.uk/SIM_Only/iPhone_Micro_SIM online You can't get the first link online because you need a micro sim but in-store you can take out any plan and they will give you a micro sim anyway.

I wouldn't recommend T-Mobile on a sim only, they cap the internet speed to less than half a mb/s.

And you're contract isn't really coming to an end, as it will continue until you formally ask them to terminate, taking your number with you if you wish. All that has changed is you've met your minimum term commitment. Other euphemisms also include; 'Due an upgrade', which is nonsensical, it's a new contract!

If you do jump ship make sure the phone company you go to has a good signal were you live or you could be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire

Most phone company's have not got great custom service now days have a look on this forum you will see for yourself the amount of complaints they get.

  • Does anyone have any genuine insight in to the Orange customer retentions/disconnections department. I don't seem to be getting anywhere!
I've been with Orange for over 10 years (with a gap where I switched to Three for a year but had to go back as reception was awful).
I have an iphone 3g and contract ends in April although I can upgrade without charge from 10 days ago. So technically every day I go over now I'm wasting money as the phone itself is technically now paid for by my £30 a month tariff. My tariff is only 150 mins, 250 texts and unltd internet - so definitely not worth me continuing to pay £30 a month for any longer than necessary! I was hanging on for the iphone 5 but thinking July...Oct? is a long way off!

So have decided on the iphone 4s but don't want to spend much more per month and ceratinly don't want to pay for the handset. I would like to go for iphone 36 extra with Orange but they want £100 upfront for handset. The only way to get it free is to go for the £46 a month tariff, which I refuse to do.

I have called them up 3 times now, thinking different people might work but am just not getting anywhere, the last time I asked for disconnections dept but don't think I was put through to them.
I have 3 other iphones on my contract and an ipad 2 so they get anywhere between £200 and £400 a month out of me as it is! I explained all this and that I'd be willing to go up from my £30 a month to £36 but i'm not paying £100 up front.

I also explained that I saw several deals online (with Orange) through dialaphone and mobiles.co.uk that offered iphone36 extra with free handset and why can't they just offer it to me direct instead of me having to go through a 3rd party and muck about with transferring numbers! He started blabbering on about the government and things being set in stone and nothing he could do! Do you think if I leave it until my actual contract end date (even though Im able to upgrade without charge now) in April I might have more luck? Or should I call back for the 4th time and be more assertive and ask for my PAC code straight away! I also tried 3 different Orange shops but they seem even less helpful!!

Grrr - any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Although you can upgrade now, it's not penalty free, the extra months you upgrade early get added on to the end of your new contract so a 18 month would become a 21 and a 24 month contract 27.

You probably don't want to hear this but yuou are going to get very little movement on an iPhone, they are selling so well they don't need to be discounted. New custoemrs and through 3rd partys may get better deals but the only way to get them is to jump through the hoops. Unfortunalty with iPhones it's a case of pay or go without, all the networks are broadly the same so theres no one doung them much cheaper.
