Tesco are (probably) just reselling a BT product.

Sky may be a LLU product.

Put your phone number/postcode into the broadband checker at https://www.samknows.com and see which ISPs service your exchange. :)
  • Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area.
Click here to compare packages available to you.
However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.
The following services are available in your location:

    BT Wholesale ADSL
    BT Wholesale ADSL Max
    BT Wholesale WBC (21CN)
    BT Wholesale SDSL
    O2 / Be LLU
    Bulldog LLU
    TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
    Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
Please select the options on the left for more information about broadband availability at your location.

Loads of options for you then. (You'll be on a Market 3 exchange). :)

For price vs performance then a LLU option would work best. Sky or TalkTalk, though I'd suggest Sky first. (The TT product can be fine, but if there are any issues then customer services can be an utter nightmare, especially via phone. TT won the Wooden Spoon award AGAIN this year).

After that you're looking at someone who resells the WBC product, which could be just about anyone. Since you're on a Market 3 exchange then people like Plusnet will offer you their lowest cost options.

I'm also on a Market 3 exchange, but I'm with BE (LLU) because I value customer service and technical performance. That said, I have landline, calls and broadband with them and the price I pay, whilst higher than what Sky/TT etc. would offer, is still reasonable. :)

Ultimately it's all down to what you value.

Either of these are worth considering...

You can save £5 on O2 by using one of their mobile phones (could be PAYG topped up quarterly)

Sky will charge £5 extra if you don't have their TV

You'll need to check the call options to see if either are worth taking.

I'm in a similar situation, I have Virgin at the moment but it's terribly expensive! (around £40 a month). Would it take a long time to switch to SKY? My main issue is that I don't have the main phone point in the house near any sockets.. so not sure how to connect the router? Would it be possible to put the router somewhere else, would it affect the speed..?

Virgin is cable, so it will use an entirely different line into the house. So if the line is not working then it will need to be activated. (I guess you know this, but thought I'd better make it clear).

You can run a longer ADSL cable, but get one which is high quality (screened, twisted pair) - don't just run a bog-standard phone extension cable. This way you can site the ADSL router near sockets without compromising (much) the ADSL speed.

Bear in mind - the speed you get on ADSL is dependant on how close you are to the exchange, and the quality of your line. Sky/others should be able to give you an estimate (although this is based on BT database figures so could be inaccurate).

Yes, I knew that, thanks. I'm not sure if the house has a BT line, I know the previous owners had Virgin too. I don't want to have a cable from the router to the phone socket, it would be in the middle of the landing...but there's another phone socket in the bedroom, could i put the routher there, or does it need to be plugged into the main phone socket?

Yes the router can be plugged into an extension box.
