recording tv??

Hello I've just bought a new Samsung tv which has freeview and freesat built in to it. We are watching the freeview but want to record some other channels / record a series etc but when I press record on the remote it comes up with a message saying I don't have this facility.

I'm thinking that I need something like a USB to record too?

I just assumed that the tv would have some form of memory up to a limit but maybe not?

I am in the middle of getting a Blue-ray player for it too so would that potentially have the ability to store programs?

Complete novice as you can tell so any help much appreciated!

Thanks
Chris

Top result for "ue46d7000 record" on google gives:

"The UE46D7000 includes both an integrated Freeview HD and Freesat HD tuner which allow you to watch a huge variety of subscription-free channels. You′ll be able to enjoy a host of your favourite TV channels in stunning high definition without ever having to sign a contract or pay extra for the privilege. What′s more, because the UE46D7000 is PVR ready, you can playback your favourite shows anytime you want. Simply plug in your high speed USB device or HDD, select the programme you want to record and let PVR feature do the rest."

So it seems like you need to plug a memory stick or a hard disk to record anything. I don't think the blu ray will help in that regard.
  • thanks very much for your help!

    USB shopping next then :)

As an aside, if you've spent that much on a TV, you should consider whether using the inbuilt PVR is the best choice...
  • how do you mean?

You can get dedicated PVR devices that offer a lot more in the way of recording than most TVs do by default. I've got a humax foxsat and it can record 2 channels whilst watching a third, has iPlayer etc built in and is really super easy to use.

It might be that the built in PVR in the TV is good enough for your needs, but it's pointless to spend money on a USB stick etc if you're going to want to get a proper PVR at some point...

But how much recording capacity are you going to get on a 16GB flash drive? It'll be next to useless. Even the smallest PVR's have a 320GB hard drive.
Get yourself a proper PVR such as the Humax-first you need to deide which platfrom you want to record from.
Foxsat HDR (Freesat HD) or PVR 9300T (Freeview SD) are recommended.
DVD recorders are not good for short term PVR use-much better for long term archiving only.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • So in the long run it may be better to get a pvr anyway I assume. The tv has iplayer built in as an app so I have that but the ability to watch other programs whilst watching others sounds good. Then again the pvr in the tv may do that anyway - ) considering the cost of the tv) so I'll check that tonight.

So if I use the built in pvr won't I still need some sort of storage device like a USB to save my programs to?

It only has a built in PVR interface (PVR ready), you still need to plug in something to store the recordings on! That can be (from the brief description above) a USB flash drive or an external hard drive.
