help- pls, cant send emails (non techie)

hi, have 2 ntlworld email accounts (virgin)
accessed via thunderbird,
i'm still recieving emails, but for past 4 days cant semd / reply...
i get "connection to smtp server smtp.ntlworld timed out "

i reset the pc to the settings it had on the 2nd jan (when it was working fine) but still doesnt send

would be grateful for any help.... please -
i'm not a techie or PC wizz so "simple language" would be appreciated

    I'd be amazed if VM are still using the old NTL server names?
    Try changing the SMTP server address in the account to: smtp.virginmedia.com
    Though if that is the case, it's weird that the POP3 server (incoming) still works.

    VM are still using the 'old' NTL server settings and they are working fine i.e. now.
  • Before making any changes, give them a call or see if there is any mention of a server problem their end. https://my.virginmedia.com/faults/service-status (for online check).

    Seems there is problems in some areas.
  • That is strange - we are using outlook express and having the same problem, we can receive but not send. We first noticed it after the outage they had.

    We have the old ntl email address too.
    What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

  • Virgin have been working on this since noon yesterday.

    Currently estimating a 5pm completion, but I think it's a bigger job than they anticipated.

    Check the service status on VM's website for latest news.
    I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
    But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

    thank you for the replies -
    even though the virgin website says our service is good, still having same problem, can recieve but not send emails on either account

    in answer to qu's - yes we did have a windows update, thats what i assumed caused it, thus i did " system restore" back to date jan 2nd, when it was working perfectly
    (thats the limit of my pc know how!;))
    but still doesnt work...

    . yes lots of us still have ntlworld accounts & virgin have promised the "ntl" bit will stay alive indefinatley

    any more ideas please - desperate to send emails

    meant to add report fault to virgin yesterday via email fault service & havent had a reply yet
  • I've just successfully sent for the first time in 48 hours. Maybe things are getting better.

    Just keep trying.
