You are a kantian then, instincts are a priori functions of human reasoning

    phil, for crying out loud!

REASONING does tells us that if we ruin the planet we go belly up! Blimey! Yes our instincts tell us, but so does science, and if that is not a product of reason I don't know what is.

Barcode has just given you excellent advice.

    Shut up Phil.

    Excuse me, why?

  • Because you're trying to complicate what is in fact a simple matter (look after the planet) and you're making a real hash of it. It doesn't impress anyone to throw 'philosophical' terms about.

I would have thought that respect for the Earth is a priori written into all religions under the sun because they all command their followers to respect and nurture their fellow humans. Therefore it logically follows that ecological respect is implicit, because a ruined environment damages not just plants and animals but, ultimately, ourselves.

And not just religions, Q. Those of us who believe that the Earth has been here a few more than four thousand years realise both the importance of ecological preservation but, crucially, believe that we are of no particular significance to the Universe and that no God is protecting us from our fate.
