Hey all,
Just done a BT line speed on BT Total (Option 3)
Coming back at 2.82 MBPS, yes, you read that right, on a 40 meg line
Any ideas?! I’m not impressed!

Is that 2.8 megabits per second, or MegaBytes?
If bytes that's not bad depending on how far you are from the street box (I'm assuming you're on their infinity package going by the up to speed), as if it's Mbytes it's ~22 megabits.
What are you using for your speed test?
IE what site, and are you connecting to the modem by a wire or wireless adapter (it's amazing the number of people who complain of a slow internet speed, and it's because they're using wireless)0 -

I’ve purposely connected my MacBook to Ethernet to run the test.
All it’s saying is 3.1MBPS, on BT’s (old) server?! This is today!💙💛 💔0 -
You still haven't answered the question - are you quoting Megabits or MegaBytes - 3.1MBps is 24.8Mbps which would suggest a sync rate of close to 30Mbps which may well be all you can get - Infinity is an upto service and like ADSL dependent on line length (to the cabinet rather than the exchange though)
Reboot your modem then try http://www.speedtest.net/index.php which at least reports in Mbps.0 -
BT Total Broadband only goes up to 20M bits/second maximum, not 40M. And it's "up to" 20M, which means anything between about 512k bit/sec and 20M. It all depends on the length and quality of the phone line.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Are you on Fibre or Copper?
Have you tried rebooting the home hub and/or fibre router?0 -

Hahaha, sorry, I’ve just come off a 15 hour working day (!)
The last 4 hours did involve alcohol, though!
I’m upto about 14 meg following reboot, it’s Mbps!

Next question is it normal ADSL or FTTC? FTTC always uses a BT supplied modem coupled with a router rather than a single hub (combined modem and router).
If FTTC is it Infinity or not - I think BT will sell FTTC but not branded as Infinity when they can't guarantee a minimum sync rate of 15Mbps. That sounds the most likely answer given you said you have BT Total Broadband.
If it isn't Infinity it isn't a 40Mbps line. Even if it is they only guarantee 15Mbps.0
