Thanks to Red Ken, hordes of criminals marauding around the metropolis, and the danger of being robbed, overcharged, conned and ripped off,

And that's just the traffic wardens !
  • Maybe if the person paid the fare instead of fare evading they wouldn't be fined £200.

Sorry to dig this tread up, but it happened to me in 2007. I touched my oyster but didn't noticed the reader didn't work and i was taken off the bus. My card was taken (just charged with £10) I was not offered to pay a penalty, and when i called TFL few weeks after the incident they told me to wait for a correspondence which i never got. I had to move house (became homeless) so i don't know if they actually wrote to me. Few weeks ago i got a court order to pay £260. I had to call the court as i didn't know what it was about. They told me it was about a penalty received in 2007.
Honestly i think £260 is too much. I am sure if they checked the cctv it was going to show me touching my oyster.
  • Funny, you wait an age for a bus and then three come along at once!

Its the passengers responsiblity to make sure they pay a fare. If the reader didn't work its your responsiblity to use another one. If none of them worked then the driver would have logged it and your never have ended up in court. Its a bit like getting on a train and trying to claim the conductor didn't come down to sell you a ticket.

Wasn't it Mrs Thatcher who said that anyone who caught a bus after the age of 30 was a failure? :)

I think you mis-heard her, she said "...anyone who BOUGHT a bus franchise would be a failure".
Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.

I don't deny being without ticket but why i wasn't offered to pay on the spot? Why TFL says they couldn't find my address to contact me sooner when i have registered all my addresses i've lived at on their website and if it's true they found me through the DWP website, i've always been there. And why did they take my card? Or just refund my £10 as the card is their property, nevermind i paid £3 to have it.

The problem with allowing people to pay a penalty fare is that in the end it works out cheaper to risk not paying and to pay any penalty fare when it arrives. So if your fare is say £1 a day and the penalty fare is £10. As long as you go over 10 days without paying you save money.
I have no sympathy for people that don't pay bus/train fares as its the people that do that has to subside the fare dodgers through higher fares. The tax payer also has to subside them on the the trains and London Buses. I personally think fare dodgers should be branded on the forehead and banned from ever stepping foot on a bus again.
