Wedding cakes

  • I bought my cake from M&S , bought cake ribbon and decorations from ebay. I made mine a three tier cake two fruit cakes and a sponge for the kids, everyone loved it and it was cheap to boot. I think I paid around £80 as opposed to £300/400 or upwards and it was more personal because we gave it our own touch.

Waitrose Entertains do lovely cakes. I bought a plain sponge covered in icing for my 50th birthday and put a topper on it and it looked great and everyone said it tasted wonderful.

If you go onto the wedding board here on MSE you will see lots of people singing the praises of M&S Cakes. If you keep an eye out you can normally get three for two (which just means the little one is free. It's only about £12 I think).

We had a very posh wedding recently and used the M&S Cakes. You need to buy the little cake columns, and we decorated it with Ribbon to match the bridesmaid dresses, and got a few extra flowers to bring it together with the theme. We also got a couple of cutting bars which we decorated to match our theme. It looked fantastic and tasted great. My Dad is a bit of a fruit cake connoisseur and couldn't believe how good it tasked.

    Here is a picture: 2m3jskj.jpg

The cutting bars were sponge, and they were also really nice. Light and tasty, lovely fruit jam filling. I think we picked them up about 2 days before the wedding but they still tasked super fresh on the day. You can order a fair way in advance and then pick up on an agreed date.

Another vote here for M&S...I had two tiers at my wedding and I went to a cake decorating shop and bought loads of blingy things to put on the top, it looked great!

My sister got married in a hurry and her sis-in-law also used M&S cakes. She decorated them a little more tastefully than I did mine but they still tasted great.

I can't understand why anyone would pay £400 for a cake!

  • Another vote for Waitrose.

I made my own cupcakes and then had a top tier cake from Waitrose - it was chocolate, covered in buttercream and then white fondant. I think now you can buy boxes of cupcakes just for occasions like a wedding, or you could buy fairy cakes from the supermarket and decorate yourself - which could be simple depending on your design. I am sure the ladies (and gents) from the special occasions cake thread could help with this.

I chose this over M&S as I dont like marzipan and at the time all the M&S cakes were covered in it.
Before, I knew this my plan was to buy 1 presentation cake (for display and cutting), and to buy the remaining portions as cutting bars - these are much cheaper and once the cake it cut up and distributed no one will notice the difference.

As for presentation I bought a cake stand from Ebay - used it for the wedding and then re-sold it - getting back approx. what I paid for it.

We also had a personalised cake topper from Ebay - this was my indulgence and was quite expensive (well I made the cupcakes, and the top cake was a 'normal' cake so wasnt over priced!).
It was us dressed in our wedding clothes, so it looks like us, and still sits on our bookcase 2 years after the event - for me it was really worth the expense.

A supermarket cake can look great with some personalisation, and no one will know where it came from.
