and that's not against the law so they can do that. You mentioned because of your time period out of work, agencies you register with are discriminating against the length of time you've been out of work, thus not being proactive with your applications or constantly sending you emails telling you you haven't been successful due to the reasons you feel discriminate against you.0 -
I am not sure where all this "agents dont put forward the unemployed" stuff comes from, hubby lost his job late last year, had interview last week, and has antoher two this week and has three good agents he is liaising with0

It comes from the 3 that have told me that their clients will not interview me when they mentioned I had been out of work a while. All seemed good up till that point. And yes I have it in writing.I am not sure where all this "agents dont put forward the unemployed" stuff comes from, hubby lost his job late last year, had interview last week, and has antoher two this week and has three good agents he is liaising with
I have told the JC and the WP and they say there is nothing they can do.
Lets hope he is not out of work a long time or that may all change for him - when you have been out of work a year the agencies do not want to help.0 -
Avoid the bigger agencies. You will have more of an advantage with your years of experience. Hit the smaller agencies, specializing in the field your in, chances are you will get put forward.
One vacancy I'm currently recruiting for has attracted just under 200 people. So I completely understand where your coming from.
I have never had a good experience with agencies. Staff promise the earth and deliver nothing. TBH, I don't know what their educational qualifications are, but I have found them to be full of hot air and not terribly bright......emails etc. littered with poor grammar and spelling mistakes i.e. your for you're

My last 5 jobs have been word of mouth referrals but I have been registered with specialist agencies, my experience was that the majority of agency staff think you are not worth talking to if you are over 40 although the age discrimination legislation came in since I was last registered. Funny the people who have employed me see my experience and not my age and you can't build a network and a reputation without experience and years in a job or two. So many recruiters are straight out of uni and probably don't really want that role but it was all they could get0

Generally speaking, what you say is correct. I believe six months is the rule of thumb. Apparently, you "lose your edge" after this period of time. Highly skilled with years of experience under your belt? Doesn't matter much. You'll find yourself wondering how the agency staff keep their jobs.....!0 -

So right! Straight out of uni and sorry to say, wet behind the ears. Very frustrating for the over 40s who are mostly capable of wiping the floor with them.0
