Never had Sky, what would you do?

Hello
We currently have BT broadband, line rental and calls. It's costing us anywhere between £43 and £55 per month.
My DH works from home on occasion and needs good bandwidth for downloading work. Other than that, we've never had Sky, so could live without it, but our 7 year old keeps making noises about us being the only ones without it (plus now Mad Men has moved to Sky, I'm more interested!)
Could anyone offer advice/warnings about Sky vs Virgin vs haggling for a better deal with BT please?
I'm not keen to have a dish on the house, so could we avoid that, or it is a necessity?
Thanks in advance!

Yes it is a necessity, unless you get Sky via cable i.e. VM. There are dishes which can be disguised but they are not cheap and Sky won't supply then you would have to source and get one fitted independently.0 -
We have had Sky TV for several years and I have never had an issue with their service.
We switched from the awful BT Broadband to Sky and I am very happy with the service.
We switched out phone from BT to Sky, and it is good but there is one caveat - the "geographic numbers" are chargeable rather than being in our inclusive local & national calls (we get around that by looking up the national numbers via saynoto0870).0 -
The dish does not have to be 'on the house'. It can be on a short stake at ground level in the garden, as long as there is still a line of sight to the satellite. But Sky will put it on the house as standard, because it's quicker and cheaper, so if this is an option that can work, you need to get an independent to install it.
Then you can trail roses around it if you wish...No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I've had SKY since God was a boy but tbh, i'd rather have Virgin's TIVO system, we live in the middle of nowhere and Virgin aren't in our area so i can't have it, but i would if i could.
Sky's unlimited broadband is superb, truely unlimited with no fair usage policy and no cut-off at peak times, just fill your boots whenever you like. Speed varies and depends on various factors but they'd be able to give you an idea prior to install. Can't comment on Virgin BB as i've no experience of it and i guess a call package is a call package.
In short, Sky is excellent and their Broadband is the best i've used, but i'd still prefer Virgin and would have them if i could - clear as mud eh!0
