Is this a legal site?

It is, but the studios would never allow it (hence all the crap on netflix at launch - don't go expecting latest releases)
If the studios had some balls, they could do a megavideo (God rest its soul) style site for £10-£15 a month, with releases coinciding with blu ray / Sky launch, if not sooner. Piracy would drop massively overnight. But then it might hurt blu ray sales, or annoy sky, and we wouldn't want that, would we?0 -
I`m looking for some advice,
I`ve recently got a new phone and i`m getting used to it and finding out what it can and can`t do.
Really i`m looking to see if it is suitable for DH to take away with him and i`m looking for a site that will allow downloads of films or tv programs to store on the SD card to watch at a later date.
I googled for sites that have films in the correct format and found one and downloaded a film expecting to have to pay for it, it never asked and i thought that it would ask for payment before it played, it never did so i`m wondering now if this site is legal after all.
The site is called itabmovies - i found it after looking on google, can anyone advise as to whether this is ok as i`m now doubting it.
If its dodgy can anyone recommend a good and legal site that allows downloads in MP4 format that isn`t too expensive. This will only be for once or twice per year so a subscription service is no good, a site that streams is no good either as there is usually no signal where DH visits as its in the middle of nowhere.
Thanks.
SD
Hello, I've checked out the site you mentioned and my advice would be to stay away from it. Also Netflix and Lovefilm - not really any good to you as their both subscription.
Have you thought about buying the triple play blu-rays as an alternative as you mentioned you already buy DVDs.
Triple-Play Blu Ray film includes a Blu Ray Disc, DVD Disc and a Digital Copy (usually will have a link & password of where to download it from). It's a little bit more expensive but if its only for once or twice a year then it may be an option.
Other than that, I know you can purchase digital films and tv shows via itunes and they are downloaded in .mp4 format and I can't see why you wouldn't be able to transfer them directly from your hard drive folder onto the portable device/phone/memory stick.
You can also rent the films for 99p (can't remember how much time you have to watch the rented ones though).
At least that's another two possible options

I have no issues downloading unofficially and use a very good service however won't go into detail as no doubt I will get shot down in flames. If that site has what you want then just use it again. I wouldny worry about it, you won't get locked up! It's the uploader who is in the wrong.
as for egal sites I have never found one for downloading movies. it is actually a very good business idea.....
Not shooting you down in flames for dodgy downloads but just wanted to correct you.
The uploader is breaching several copyright laws by sharing films illegally without the copyright holders permission.
The downloader is also breaching copyright laws by illegally downloading films as they also do not have permission, they can also be arrested for handling stolen goods, piracy, copyright infringement and a few others.
For downloading illegal films if you are successfully prosecuted the minimum you would get is a very hefty fine, court fees etc but just to let you know you can be imprisioned for a maximum of 10 years for each copyright infringement i.e. each illegal film or song download.0 -

Yes, although a little extreme and very, very, very unlikely.
If you do not like downloading and you can be traced in that way, join something like LoveFilms that very surprisingly still offers DVDs, get several DVDs a month and then copy it using a converter to your SD card. This is still illegal.

As said, that is true but highly unlikely hence why it is not even worth mentioning. The movie studios don't like downloading illegally yet offer no legal alternative to download a movie. They cannot have their cake and eat it.0 -

Uh... no. You cannot be arrested for handling stolen goods for downloading a film, what utter nonsense.
Usually, if you're just downloading you're not committing a criminal offense, for the most part copyright is dealt with under civil law, there are only certain criminal offences relating to copyright law, mostly about misapplying trademarks (this is what is usually used against people selling pirate disks at markets and such), and breaking copy protection0 -

It's not called handlng of stolen goods exactly (I know that), but I am trying to provide general advice to OP and also correct someone waffling on about dodgy downloads. So "utter nonsense" isn't needed and I'm not turning this thread into a debate about the ins and outs of copyright law. Its the last post I'm mentioning on the subject as my post was intended to be helpful through general guidance.
There isn't the need to be so picky over one line, even if its slightly incorrect because the general message is correct. Downloading flims for free without the copyright holders permission is illegal, people have and can be prosecuted for it. fact.
Anyway, back to the matter at hand I hope the OP has found an option they want to consider.0 -
Wow, i hadn`t realised that this was going to be such a minefield
As someone mentioned earlier it would be a great idea for a new business as there must be thousands who would be interested.
Thanks to everyone who posted with possibilities and advice.

Jaymo- Many thanks for this - it does seem to me to be the most suitable option, we only have an ancient bog standard DVD player but the blue rays could be put to one side for when we eventually upgrade, the digital copy sounds as if it is just what we need and you are right in that as its only for a couple of times a year then it is a good option
Thanks once again for this as i had no idea about it.
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon
