And also when I pot seedlings of anything on, am I supposed to bury the plants deeper than what they had been? I've seen references to this in the posts I read this evening.
Tomatoes and chillies, yes. They develop more roots from the stem, so will give them a stronger anchor if you plant them a bit deeper. Tomatoes can go up to their neck.If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

Seeds are cheap but the taste of home grown peas are immense. In fact sow double as you will eat half of them raw they are that good!!!!!!
I've got 13 of the Kelvedon Wonder to plant. I just grabbed a few from a seed parcel I was sent to have a test. I did buy a bag of dried peas from Morrisons though, so I might sow a few handfuls of those to see what I get.If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

Have you tried them? Any good? I got half a kilo for about 50p. Even if I just use them for pea shoots, they'll be worth it.
Then of course there's always grey peas and bacon, a traditional Black Country dish. I get the catering bacon offcuts for about £1/lb and make a big vat of it for a couple of quid. :money:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

No not tried them but definatly people do - in fact here is a (old) thread where its mentioned - http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine/vegging-out/mushy-peas_27239.html
OH - i have never seen that dish anywhere (and i love to eat!!!) I guess it a real local dish
I did buy some other day and thought there where the quick soak ( I luuuuuuuurve proper mushy peas) but these ones take about 16 hours so i may well give them a go at sowing them instead. As much as i love mushy peas a 16 hour wait is a tad excessive!!!!! :rotfl:0 -
Annie123, you've planted 50 pea plants??? Do pea plants not have high yields then? I can put more in, I'm just not sure what type of quantities we're talking about. My peas are Kelvedon Wonders.I've sown two pea plants.
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I've sown another 50 now, and will do more end of the month. I love the taste of fresh peas from the pod.
Peas are picked from the bottom of the plant as they mature so on your 2 you may have 1-4 pods ready at the same time, enough for almost one person's dinner! with 50 at a time I have enough ready at the same time for the dinner table, or to freezer or jut eat of the plant. How long do you microwave the compost for to make it sterile?
I put mine in a plastic bowl on high for 90 seconds maybe.0 -

I'm one of those people, especially when you see the reduced due to torn box etc;)mrbadexample wrote: »Have you tried them? Any good? I got half a kilo for about 50p. Even if I just use them for pea shoots, they'll be worth it.
I grow pea shoots all year round indoors. It's the one thing that doesn't seem to mind lack of light in the winter, but I'm only asking them to grow 6".
Last year for the first time I tried growing them as peas outside. One lot grew to around 5' and produced an average crop, the other 2' and produced a good crop. So for my 10p yellow stickered box I was very pleased and will do it again this year, but I've sown short so far so I know when they will be finished as I need the space after.
Doing an indoor lettuce experiment at present, south facing verses north facing windows for winter/spring cut and come again.
So far the north facing is way better than the south. Looks healthier, greener and grows quicker.
I do have loads of pics on my camera but no way to get them onto the computer as the cable has stopped working, must get another one.0 -

Yeah, I know, and I know it's likely to be a *little* later here as I'm in a village outside the heat island of the town, but it's still a lot earlier than I thought!
This year, I must actually start noting down dates of last and first frost. For some reason, I didn't last year. And yes, I know they vary year to year, but at least if I start keeping a record I'll be able to build up my own individual picture. :-)I'm broke, not poor. Poor sounds permanent, broke can be fixed. Seedling shots:
The Galina are recovering reasonably well from having their heads bitten off.
I need to sow a few more tomatoes as back ups as I've only got one or two of some varieties. I've got three that haven't germinated at all: Orange Banana, Green Sausage and Sara Black. I'll have to try chitting the seeds to see if there's any viability. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0
