selling car, what shall I do, please help

hi
i have a car that i can no longer afford to run/keep.
The Mot runs out next week, and my insurance runs out at end of month, as does breakdown cover.

I dont know what to do, or in what order to do things,
or what is the process and consequences of selling car, in regards
to future insurance quotes etc.

i have four years NCB. and ive learnt i lose this after 2 years of not driving. ive done some price quotes now to see the diff in insurance quotes with no ncb, and the diff is not huge, what seems to happen is the insurance is MUCH more cheaper if youve held car for a few years, when i say ive just bought same car, the insurance shoots up. so this means NCB is not a huge worry if i lose that, agree?

do i need to sell car BEFORE the mot runs out?
or do i get another mot test passed?
can i sell car even when i am not insured on it? because insurance
runs out at end of month.

are there any other considerations i need to know, or things i am unaware of?

and whats the best quickest way to sell car?
can someone recommend the 2 best websites please?

thankyou for any help/advice given.

  • If you can get another 12 months MOT on the car, it will be worth far more than the cost of paying for the MOT.

First port of call to get a starting price for a quick sale is webuyanycar.com then you could try seeing if any local garages wish to buy the car from you, or try autotrader / local papers / ebay / gumtree etc to try to sell.

I wouldn't worry about future insurance too much, the market changes virtually daily so who knows what rules and costs they will have in a couple of years time.

If you let the insurance lapse, you can still sell the car, but obviously it can't be on the public road which will make it harder and if someone stole / set fire to the car then you'd have no cover, so not something to be recommended.
  • thanks.

MOT, it could cost £30 or so, but if work needs doing in order for it to be passed, it could cost alot more.
(has been driving/working perfectly though lately)
So i just dont know what to do. Try to sell, or do MOT.
webuyanycar values it at around £200, not good really, as autotrader has similar cars for £800 on average.

ebay sale, would be highest bidder gets it? without even coming to see it or drive it?

so if i still have the car and my insurance runs out, i just cant drive it, but its ok to still legally own it?
it will be in a secure car park. so ideally a buyer would drive it away after buying it.

    Value of car??, matters hugely, but generally;

Get an mot unless there is a problem, then fess up or you are on your own.

Sell it before the ins exspires, that way you will be able to drive the vehicle for the purchaser.

Take care, don't let a potential buyer drive the car without viewing thier ins

Don't let the buyer drive your car on their ins after yours has expired, theirs won't cover it.

Advertise at the side of the road, pistonheads, autotrader etc etc, as before, what car age price etc????;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Their insurance may not cover them if yours has expired. You need to see their policy document to say it won't. I'd also keep details to cover any potential problems.

Also when does the tax run out? It is illegal to have an untaxed car on the road (let alone drive it) so if it's not got long to go you will either need to sell the car before then or tax it for another 6 months if you want buyers to be able to test drive it.

Webuyanycar is good for a quick sale, remember that, are those advertised at £800 selling for that?? probably not, maybe selling for £650 after buyers have negotiated discount, depending on how you advertise maybe you spend an extra £50 trying to sell it, plus MOT at £30, as I don't think it would get near to £800 without a good MOT left on it. Soon the difference between webuyanycar and selling it isn't as big.

Regarding the secure car park, is it so secure that no-one would ever steal / burn down the car from within it and leave you with nothing if you have no insurance?
  • thanks everyone. tax is fine, runs out in summer 2012.
    £10 for autotrader and pistonheads?!
anyone know the best way to put car on ebay? make it a buy it now offer? or bidding type thing? minimum price? cash in hand? they buy it without seeing it first?

car park is pretty secure yes, yes ill try to sell it before insurance runs out, might have to
do the mot i think, as i cant drive it without that anyway.

cheers all. keep you posted. this is so stressful, im not enjoying it.

Having a 12 month MoT will make the car saleable as a runner, so will add a lot of value. Well worth the cost, unless you have hugely expensive remedial work to do on it.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

    thanks.
so say if i go for mot, and it fails, requiring £500 of work doing in order for it to pass.

can i then NOT do the work, and just sell car with no mot pass certificate? i cant afford a huge MOT/service bill.

and when i do find a buyer, make sure its cash in hand yeah?
and do i need to make a receipt for him/her?

and any other paperwork need doing? all that comes to mind Registration Certificate.
    anything else?

    thanks
