I too would recommend the Norwich and Peterborough Gold Classic Account. I opened it for the free ATM cash usage and no fee debit card. I have recently come back fro Australia and I had no trouble there or in Dubai using the N&P card. Excellent exchange rates and no usage or atm fees. I can also confirm that australian ATMs operated by Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, NAB, Westpac or Bendigo Banks did not levy any charges for usage at point of sale as it were.
Their internet banking is also really easy to use. I am so impressed by the Norwich and Peterborough since opening the account that I am considering moving my banking to them. Hope it helps0 -
Well thank you all very much.
There is a some brill information and tips there and put all together it makes a great wealth of knowledge not just for us but other users looking for the same kind of information and we'll be able to work through and decide whats best for him.
Unfortunately we are in far reaches of the north so a trip to London is not really an option for us, for could be for many others. But we will certainly look into all other recommendations.
As for the security aspect he has a tablet thingy to take with him, so any on-line banking will be done via that.
Once again I really appreciate everybody's contributions and the time they've taken to be helpful.;)

With regards to internet - most hostels I was in over there charged by the hour for it. If he mainly just wants to browse the internet, then its far cheaper to get a PAYG sim card data plan (he'll need one anyway for calling/texting people). I used Virgin Mobile while I was there and it was something like $10 (£6.50) for 1GB which lasted me most of the month with ease. It may not mean much to you, but if he has a phone that can make wifi hotspots (virtually everyone with a smartphone should) he can share the data between the phone and the tablet. Then if you want to upload lots of photos etc. wait until you're in a free wifi hostel, or in one of the many backpacker travel agents that let you use the computers for free (Peter Pans is a good one, and there are a few others).0
