Bank Accounts for Travellers

Good morning,
I know this has probably been asked hundreds of times but things change so often along with terms & conditions that I thought I'd see if anyone has any advice to offer.
My son - 21 year old - worked since leaving school - is off travelling in May/June this year. He has always banked with Nationwide, never had overdraft or credit card.
He has around 5 - 6k which he wants to able to access as cheaply as possible and also be able to use internet banking as he was thinking (for safety purposes) of maybe leaving it in his Nationwide Account and transferring it as n when he needs it.
He's planning to travel from Thailand, down through Asia and to Australia, maybe visiting New Zealand for a while and will be gone for a year:(
He's thinking of maybe working in Australia so also needs to be able to possibly have money paid into the account as well.
Thanks in advance.

This topic comes up very often so a quick trawl of the forum would find dozens of replies, plus of course if you did even a small amount of research, instead of expecting others to do it for you, you would find that there is a MSE quide on this very subject. To save you five seconds here it is Cheap Travel Money: Top cards for spending abroad0

You are quite rude.
As you offered the OP the link anyway, why not just post the link minus the sarcastic, unhelpful comments?
Maybe they don't know their way around the forum, as well as you do.
Good manners in life, make things far more pleasant for everyone.
OP - I can't help sorry. However, I hope you find a suitable account.0 -

Error message: page doesn't exist.......I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
Ah. Thanks Daisy.
I forgot to try the link!0 -

Hi,
Not sure about specific accounts, but hopefully the following may be of some help -

Well said Sim!0 -
Hi susieh, not sure where you/your son live but MetroBank works for us - and, yep, it was worth our while going to the London area from the frozen north to open an account which was quick, pain-free and, to be honest, a pleasant experience eg coffees, toilets and comfortable surroundings. Just remember to take more-than-enough id information to help avoid any problems. Having said that, we still also use our Nationwide credit card when abroad and carry the flexi-account card "for emergency"
Not sure why agrinnall chose to reply in the manner it comes across maybe there was a bad hair day going on and the best advice is just to ignore.0 -
Yes, I was more than a bit brusque in my response, for which I apologise, and I should have checked that the link worked (copy and paste from the top of the page which obviously went a bit wrong somewhere). I think I'd just seen too many posts on various boards recently that ask questions that have been asked many times before, but I should have done what everyone else had in the 5 hours since the first post and not replied at all.0

More sarcasm.
You can't help yourself!
