Ebayer wants to wait 10 days to pay...?

I just sold a handbag through ebay and the person who won the auction only joined the site on january the 7th and has just the one (very cheap item) feedback, albeit positive. They didn't pay straightaway and I got suspicious as I haven't sold on ebay for years so I sent the invoice through asking for payment asap.

I got an email back saying that they loved the handbag and they wanted me to make sure I packaged it properly as it's delicate and could they wait until the end of the month to pay (10 days).

Alarm bells are ringing for me as why bid on something you can't pay for and why insist it's packaged properly... Is this usual for sellers?? I buy on ebay all the time and I always pay straightaway so I don't understand the wait. What should I do?

Any advice would be gladly accepted!!

  • Tell her that she shouldn't have bid if she can't pay (maybe give but of sarcasm e.g. So you tell TESCO you're going to pay for your shopping ten days late), then remind her that you ensure all of you're items are packed properly, then exactly four days after your auction ends open a non-paying bidder dispute, which you should be able to close in a further four days. And if she does pay remember to send it tracked, try https://www.collectplus.co.uk or https://www.myhermes.co.uk so she can't claim it didn't arrive.
  • Send a polite email saying that you require payment prior to shipping. Remind the buyer that if they pay by PayPal they are covered in the event that the items are not as described.

I think it is a scam. Wait a couple of days and send another invoice. If they haven't paid by the end of the week raise a case with Ebay.

Thing is, until 8 days have passed, as a seller, you need to keep a non paying buyer happy. Tell her that's fine, then after day four open an NPB, then close on day 8. That gives her 8 days to pay. That's what I'd do.

You think its a scam - yet you would tell the buyer how easy it is to get their money back from paypal. How strange.

I allow up to 10 days anyway, if the buyer lets me know.

Immediate payment are BIN not auctions.

OP, I don't see any scam, what scam do you think it is? Yes, the buyer should have asked beforehand, but now they have, I would go with it. It's still quicker than relisting.

Why dont you tell them that the automatic unpaid assistant opens a non payment case on day six and closes four days later, explain that will still give them time to pay, which it will.

I don't agree with saying yes and opening the case on day four and then closing it on day eight, not if you have agreed to them paying on day ten.

I would also refrain from any sarcastic reply.

Me too. Some buyers are like that - they need to ask you to pack it carefully just in case it hadn't occurred to you, and they don't feel at all worried about keeping you hanging about waiting for payment. There's not a lot you can do other than be professional and courteous in your replies, and then decide if you want to file NPB and relist, or simply give them the 10 days to pay. Only you can decide which route is the least hassle for you, but polite and straightforward is far less hassle than being sarky - which causes far more grief than it's worh!

Maybe they are waiting for payday, especially if the particular item doesn't come up often or at that price?
  • I have had this happen a few times. Buyers usually offer a genuine reason as to why they cant pay right away. I have always accepted this and ask them to keep me informed of the situation and to let me know when they have made payment. This has always worked for me but if it didnt then i would rais a non payment against them if you then hear nothing else.
There could be a valid reason-especially if they are new to ebay and Paypal.
    Hope that helps:D

I've only had this once (a delayed payment). The successful bidder wrote me a very nice message explaining that she wanted the item and had bid, but wouldn't have the money until her payday a week later. She had low but good feedback, and gone to the effort to message me about this before I'd even issued an invoice. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and she duly paid one week later as agreed. Transaction concluded with no stress on either side.

I appreciate that it could have gone the other way (she might never have paid) but my choice was either to trust her or to go to the effort of re-listing.
