Can I be forced to use my own car for business mileage?

You cannot be forced to use your car, but you may be told to use public transport and will almost certainly be seen as uncooperative / difficult if you refuse. I have never seen a contract which stated an employee was required to use his car as a condition of employment but many of us are expected to do it. How long have you been employed? If less than two years(?) your employment can be terminated without giving a reason.

    ..less than 2 yrs.

Hardly cover the Fuel, never mind buying, insurance, maintenance.
Poor employers asking workers to subsidise poor business plans.

There is - sell your car. Or resign. Both will work.

I once did enough milage years ago to pay for my car in two months.
It was a disaster when they bought pool cars.

must have been a cheap car, there is a limit to the tax allowance, after that you get taxed on the mileage

Are we not assuming the employer will actually pay the full rates, OP can you confirm they will pay you 45 pence per mile (1st 10,000 miles)

Not relevant if the journey is only from home to a single place of work and back.

It can be a different place of work every day.

Use during the working day on behalf of your employer requires 'business use' insurance.

Wrong depending on insurer. Commuting on insurance is to a single point. I did agency work and had to have Class A business use on my policy as I didn't have a fixed place of work. As it was free and unlimited mileage I didn't mind.

An employer can pay mileage at anything he likes/agrees with staff. The HMRC rates are only what they will accept as covering costs, anything above that and they will be looking for tax.
Company cars/pool cars are a real pain. In the good old days giving someone a crappy company car in lieu of a decent salary was a great dodge. Now with all the tax hassles, for both employer and employee, they are not worth the hassle.
Consideration has to be given, by any decent business, why they are having their staff out on the road. It takes them away from doing what they are paid to do and you have to be pretty strict about the type and condition of cars that are rolling up to customers premises.

If they don't you can claim the difference from the IR. Nice little rebate once a year :)
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
