Yes I agree - under normal circumstances they are designed not to give rise to problems. In your case from what you've said you get a problem, which you are able to fix by doing a system restore - hence it would appear logic that there is an update that is causing this.
By doing updates in portions you should be able to tell which portion has the "bad" update, then by further dividing you should eventually identify the culprit. In the end you do all the good updates and leave the bad.
Its called the binary theory - cut the problem in half, if the updates work then it must be in the other half: cut in half again etc. At some point you find the error in a portion - you then reverse that last update, then do that portion again, but sub-dividing the components until you identify which one it is.
This might be difficult to comprehend, but it does work, and the most important thing is giving you control. When we see which one it is, we will be in a better position to understand where the probkem lies and what we need to do, if anything.0 -

The OP has said that the problem occurs after a windows update, which he is able to correct be doing a restore. And while never say never with puters I think it is unlikely to be a bad connection?0 -
