I'll try and help. Buy some questions first.

When you say the screen light goes out, can you clarify? Are you saying the image on the screen becomes very dim? Or are you referring to other lights? In this regard it would also be helpful to know what the laptop make/model is, the Operating system Windows XP, Vista, 7 etc. Also do you know which updates you are reversing out? It depends on the system you're running, but if XP, you can goto:
    http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
and then check your update history by clicking on the last update to see what was downloaded. Let us know.

It sounds as though a MS update has messed up one of the laptop's motherboard drivers.

It would be worth going to your laptop maker's support website and downloading the drivers, then installing them again after the MS update. If that's the cause, it's quite likely to be the graphics chipset driver, but not necessarily.
  • thanks for the help

it's the brightness on the screen that doesn't work when i plug the cable lead in

it works ok but doesn't work when i switch on following an update

its been happening for a couple of months i do a system restore to a previous date then when i plug in the cable lead it works ok until i shut down thats when ms installs the updates.

i have a compact laptop with windows 7

i can follow simple advice if someone has the time to tell me what to do step by step

Fwor may well be right, but it worth checking the MS updates first, otherwise the problem could continue.

In your list of programs, click on Windows Update. You will then see a pane which on the left gives you a number of options, and on the main rightside pane a list of updates.

If you click on update history you may be able to determine which ones were done last, and any probs.

On check for updates,(exclude the optional ones), but you should see a list of updates waiting, which will probably include the one, or ones that are causing a problem.

You haven't told us your system so can't tell you which one it might be.

Now I would also now click on change settings, and then click on the drop down menu and change from "install updates automatically" to "let me choose".

You could then if you wished update them one at a time and find which one it is. As Fwor said it may be one related to GPU/Video/Graphics.

That's very odd - from what you are saying, the laptop screen's backlight goes out or goes dark when you plug the mains adaptor in?

That sounds more like the power settings have been messed up - normally it would do the opposite (i.e. it would dim the screen when it is disconnected).

Have you checked the Windows Power settings to see if they make sense?
  • thanks for the hekp sorry but my computer knowledge is very limited

when i switch the laptop on the screen is dim once its booted up then i plug the extension lead in the screen still stays dim

if i do a system restore to a previous date say december reboot once loaded i plug the extension lead in and the screen goes from dim to bright

    hope that makes sense

Thats normal - under battery power to save power it keeps the screen dim - when you plug in the power adapter it then doesn't need to save the power, hence brighter.

I don't think that was it as I'd expect to see one relating to hardware/drivers etc.

I hope that you've switched from "install updates automatically" to "let me choose". this will allow you to control the updates yourself. On the right pane list of high priority updates, remove the clicks on the left,

If it was me, I would take a system backup (accessories\system tools\system restore and choose backup - name it so you now which is which if you need to do another -I would then select a number of updates by clicking the boxes, specifically those just relating to windows initially. I would do 10 at a time, repeat until you recreate the problem. (doing a backup after each).

When the problem is recreated, restore the system to the last backup, then instead of 10, try 5, and repeat, if okay must be in the other 5. Now try another 2, etc. In this way you can drill down to the one that is causing the problem.

If you have a strong feeling it is the one you referred to above, you can of course just run that one update in the same way as described.
