buying 1st car..what do I do?

Okay so I'm going to pick up my first car tomorrow at 12..

The car is MOT'd, but not taxed. And I don't have insurance yet.

I can get the insurance sorted before I go if I need to, as I already have the quotes etc ready to go.

Can I drive it home without any tax though? And am I right in thinking I have to wait until I get my insurance documents in the post before I can tax it? It can sit in the driveway until I get the tax sorted, but I just want to make sure Im ok to drive it from the dealership to my house without the tax?

No you can't drive it home. What you should of done was come here a few days earlier to ask and we could of told you to get the insurance prearranged, get the paperwork, get the tax and then collect it legally and do any amount of driving you want.

Instead you've chanced it and now you want to bring it home illegally. Sorry but you're going to have to leave it there now. Unlike insurance someone else could in theory drive it on their insurance if you'd not got that but it was taxed but with tax its 100% illegal to use on the road unless you have trade number plates.

Ok well I only found out today I was getting it, as my uncle bought it as a surprise.

Can I get the tax at the post office in the morning then?

Yes, you will have to apply for a new tax disk, you will need your mot and insurance details ( cover note ) and the new owner part of the V5 doc.

Insure the car with a company that'll do an online certificate, print it out and take it with you tomorrow.
Take it with the slip from the v5 and the mot to a local post office when you go to pick up the car, (not in the car, get whoever takes you to collect it to run you to the PO), and buy a tax disk.
    Drive it home.
It's worth a phone call beforehand to the local PO to ensure they're happy with the printed cert, most are nowadays.
It's worth taking the policy and the schedule, as sometimes they can't tell which is the correct one.

I did that to pick up my last car.

Sorry HAL, I didn't realise that you could print off the certs these days and take them to the PO. That'll be your best option then (along with disregarding my previous advice!). Generous uncle, don't suppose you'd share him?
  • Just rang local police station to check and they have said I'll be fine as long as I drive it home and leave it there until I get it taxed, and have the receipt etc with me so I can show I've only just bought it incase I get stopped.

LOL, did you ask them to put it in writing for you??

What the officer behind the desk says and what the traffic officer does when the car flags up on ANPR could well be very different!!

I would NEVER trust anything a the police say over the phone (unless you have it recorded with confirmation of their name etc - in which case you could then have them for entrapment). Go and get it taxed FIRST or you'll be back here asking how to handle a FPN.
  • Is the car from a trader? Get them to tax it (at your expense) with their traders policy. I've seen it done plenty of times.

Get the chief constable to personally sign your Guinness bottle label you carefully steamed off last night OP and stick that in your windscreen:rotfl:
