Reusing an old modem

i've just bought a bluray player for OH and it has smart tv capabilities. Great but it has a LAN port in the back and the wireless router is downstairs.......

I suspect I can use my old Netgear DGN2000 wireless modem router in the bedroom to pick up the wifi signal from our Virgin Media Super hub in the living room and plug the bluray player straight into it.

But googling has been tricky as I don't know the exact terms I'm looking for and what they would make the router do! it could be bridging, it could be repeating, I'm not sure. Please can someone point me in the right direction?

Many Thanks :D

Edit: also we don't actually need the netgear to put out a wifi network either as we have a great signal from the one in the living room. We just need to be able to plug the blu ray into it.

Homeplug is what you want, a twin pack would be good, can get them for about £30 and come with everything you need - plugs and cables.

All you go is plug them in and run a cable from one to a spare port on the router, then plug the second homeplug into a power point next to the TV and run a network cable from the Blu-Ray to the homeplug. The only caveat with this is that all the plugs go through the same fusebox.

if you then decide to move the TV and player, just unplug from the wall and replug somewhere else. Connection sets itself back up.
  • Thanks Neil, I'm starting to wonder if the Virgin superhub actually has support to do the kind of thing I want to do...... something like you've mentioned would likely be the better option - and much cheaper than the wireless adaptor for the bluray! Would ideally like to do this without spending any more money, but this isn't an ideal world ;)
