Hi
Ok apologies as i know this will have been covered umpteen times but its on behalf of my daughter who wanted her own domain name and website .....shes saved up her own money and i want to make sure she does nt get ripped off out there as each search i do turns up different price plans etc etc and frankly im just getting more and more confused.
So....
she wants to buy her own .com domain name(Im seeing prices at around 5.99 to 8.99 per year???)
web space...shes quite savvy on web design and has used the free websites up till now so id imagine alot of the tools are built in although she does her graphics on paint shop pro ????so is she best to stick with one of these all in one packages that supply the web building tools etc ??and is there anywhere that offers say a one of fee per year(we are with blueyonder....now virgin apparently but i dont think any space could be used as a .com without a reference to blueyonder??
so to summarise
1)how much should she expect to pay for her .com ?
2)what is her best option?(on a tight budget as i really wnt her to do this herself as a challenge)
I guess you ve figured by now im cluelesas on this:o so any advice and recommendations will be gratefully received.
thanks in advance

Most of the buy your domain from us for $5 will offer hosting but they normally make the domain registraton fee back in their hosting packages or put advertisements on the websites. Well that is what I noticed when I had a look in to this route a few years ago. I now pay a company in East Kilbride to host my website. I bought the domain and registered it, had it pointed to their servers and uploaded my website with an FTP client. I also have an email box which they charge me for I think it is £18 a year.
For the design I used Microsoft Frontpage its basic for most things but worked for me. It is a what you see is what you get html editorn which makes the design process and editing process very easy. If she wants to learn html then she can also use the code editing in frontpage.0 -

Hi and thanks for the reply
Its the all in one companies i was looking at but i just did nt know if it was the way to go or not.
She does alot of her own html coding and as a teenager shes currently sound asleep:rolleyes: so im not sure which programme she writes it in(she does do alot on paintshop pro .
I think shes probably at a middle ground in that shes reliant on alot of the tools that come with the likes of the freewebs site etc but ill need to ask her(is there a free web design package she could download??)
thanks again for your reply0 -

these are the sort of sites i was looking at but i was unsure if it was the way to go....one thing that concerns me is if she registers it seems to cost around 7 to 8 pound per year for a .com......these domains cant be boughht outright??
thanks again0 -
look up www.nominet.org that will give information about .uk and they recommend registration through and ISP.0

If she wants to create her own website with paid hosting etc there are a lot of different things to consider. You do get a lot of tools with the free sites that you wouldnt get if you get paid hosting.
Also, its always useful to look up FTP - A programme like this is very useful and once you are used to it very easy to understand
There are also an awful lot of free scripts around to use depending on what she actually wants to do with her site

Hello and thanks
She started off by using the templates that came with freewebs and developed over to adding her own html coding and working on blending her own graphics, pixelling etc ....she likes making glitter graphics and all things girly:p ....but theres a definate seed been planted and frankly theres not to much cash around just now but with some help shes got just over £50.00 together so i really want to try to get her value for money so she can keep developing her interest in this and at least take it forward a bit more.
I was wondering whether the space that would have come with blueyonder/virgin can be used to host her site without any reference to blueyonder etc(e.g mysite.com....and not mysite@ blueyonder.co.uk??(edited....did nt realise it was a real address link)
that would save her something and whilst she will have to wait till the christmas hangover is cleared i am keen on buying her dreamweaver/frontpage and an ftp programme....but unfortunately she will have to wait for now
thanks for your reply and thanks again everyone..:T
Any other suggestions welcome:j0 -
