I have a young daughter who lives abroad and have just bought her an ipad.

I set up an iTunes account and attached a pre-paid visa card which I topped up with £10.

I was amazed yesterday that Apple don't seem to physically authorise payments for apps each time and she has managed to spend nearly £20.

Obviously this couldnt be charged to the card and the account was stopped until payment -which I have no done.

I had heard before of the fraudulent scheme of buying hacked/stolen accounts with unlimited downloads (until apple notice) - this seems to backup those stories and they don't seem to have acted to stop it.

This seems an amazing procedure for such a large company and wondered what your thoughts were.

Do you think it is worth their while to pay card transaction fees for every 69p purchase individually?

It's a pain when you buy something and they don't charge it to your card for a week or so. And that's why I removed my card details and started using iTunes cards.

Its not a lot of difference to Sky where if you buy a movie it doesn't check/ charge your account immedialy, The boxes have a credit limit they will go to before they have to connect other wise it tells the servers next time it connects. Or a shop where they only authorise card transactions above a certain amount.

In that vein it could be in app purchases that are only synced when the device syncs.

Worst you can do is steal £20 of Apps, and if the bills not paid the account marked as delinquent and the next time you sync apps could be removed or disabled.

If something was authorised each and every time it would slow the system down, Apple choose to adopt a model where they only check every so often.

Their business model and their choice.

Use the prepaid credit card to purchase iTunes card and then apply it to the account.

I too got tired of the payments showing up days later and used my credit card to purchase the iTunes cards (on multi-buy offers) which are now credit to my account.
I can also see my balance whenever I log in.
