Money Saving ways to stop our cars being nicked ...

Evening all,

I drive a Rover Metro - hardly the sort of car you'd expect anyone to want to steal, let alone in Swanage, but that's what someone tried to do over the weekend. Fortunately they didn't manage to get it started but caused alot of damage and upheaval in the process. They also pinched the sat nav which was in the glove compartment (not on display).

I figure they must have thought it was an easy target as it's an old car. This can only get worse as other cars get newer so I'm looking for some ways to protect it, but on the cheap as it's a cheap car after all.

I'm looking to fit it with an alarm - I figure that noone's going to want to try and steal a car which is beeping loudly. Are there cheap alarms available which can be installed by a person with OKish car skills? Any recomendations?

The other things I'm now doing (both at the cost of £0) is using my krooklock (never thought I'd need it in Swanage) and keeping my replacement sat nav out of the car.
Also, I will on longer have "Theft" on Third party, fire and theft insurance (saving £15pa) - even if they took my car and everything in it, it would not be financially viable to claim with increased future premiums, loss of no claims bonus etc...etc...

So come on - let's have some good money saving ideas to stop the krooks nicking our cars - any recomendations of alarms much appreciated!

Tom

I suspect the reason is your car is one of the few cars on the street/area old enough to NOT have an immobiliser. ALL cars from 1998 had to have them in the UK. Your car can simply be hotwired.
    Something like this:

is obviously cheap but may be quite difficult to fit. I contemplated doing it on my old car but never did for that reason, new one has an alarm.

    Batteries would be a pain.

More hassle than its worth especially if you don't tighten it properly.

Take out the HT leads so the engine can't physically fire. Whilst these can be replaced, I doubt many people will come prepared. You could also pull the starter fuse.

Carry a couple of buckets in the car and when you park it up syphon the petrol out and take it with you, hey presto your car is imobilised. Or you could take the wheels off and leave it on bricks (remember to carry bricks in the car as they can be hard to find when you need them)
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
  • Sit alongside the car Deliverance style sans teeth, with loaded shotgun across lap:D

Maybe then said scroats will get the message/decent punishment:p

Memorise the line " yes officer I heard a noise and came outside and saw the scroat( young/old whatever low/life applies at the time) lying on the ground bleeding I have no idea what happened to it but would like to sue it for damages as it appears to have damaged my locks/window9please delete as applicable:rotfl::rotfl:

    Don`t forget to sue them/it for trauma:D
  • One of those steering wheel locks that cover the whole wheel which I hear are meant to be good. Get one of those gear stick locks too, the cheap one that slips over the handbrake.

Leave glove box open and take the parcel shelf out.

No one will want to nick it to sell/ship abroad etc like with new cars, but plenty of scotes will for a joy ride given the chance.

No? !!!!!! tried to take my neighbours 70's 3L classic rover from his drive for SCRAP METAL. He came home and found them in the act trying to pull it off his drive.

Just because it won't go abroad doesn't mean it isn't worth scrap money and I suspect thats why it was probably targetted.
