I certainly never get embarrassed about my thrifty ways and when people ask me how on earth I can afford lovely holidays, I tell them its because I am tight with money in other areas of my life!

When I got 2 fillet steaks from MrW for less than the price of a pint of milk, I wanted a megaphone to tell the world :D

Last time I went into Wa!trose, I bought 3 bags full of goodies, mostly meat, and it came to £10 something! I looked at the cashier and said "Not a bad haul for a tenner, eh?" She looked at the bags again and just said "wow, that is amazing"

Hate to say, I do get the odd twinge of embarrassment hunting through the whoopies at the local MrT from time to time... but then I catch myself on and think essentially, by being careful with the pennies over time it adds up to the sort of pay rise I'd struggle to ever get from work!

Every £1 I save I think of as giving myself a wee £1 pay rise lol :D

P.s. really we should be feeling smug about the whole MSE thing!
    MW House Deposit Pot (£1000/£20000)
    Rainy day savings (£3000/£6000)
    GC Feb 2012 (£60.02/£150)
    Gifts money spent / actual value 2012 (£56.98 / £160.98)
  • I think you should be proud - not embarrassed. Me and DS were in a busy newsagents this afternoon getting a birthday card. He wanted a drink but I had only a small amount of money in my purse so we were counting all the small change and he then worked out what drink we could afford. I was really proud of him because he is 13 and never batted an eyelid at all the people around him!

This is very very different from how I used to be btw, which is why I have debts.

Similarly, I often find myself saying "thanks" to the ATM
I always say "thank you" to the self service tills at hte supermarket
  • I love getting a bargain and could'nt care less what people think.
To be honest I find people who don't try to save money are the weird ones.
Why on earth would you not want to get as much as possible for whatever you have to spend.
Let people tut,I'll be the one going home with much more in my shopping bag for spending less money.

I'm not usually embarrassed but yesterday but first Approved Foods order was delivered- to my Consultant Dr neighbour! When I saw the delivery slip I was panic-ing that their logo would be stamped all over the box and relieved that it as just a plain brown box! Silly really as it as full of pasta, dates, dried fruit, seeds and nuts and couscous all organic and at rock bottom prices. I even fibbed and told her it was a delivery from the 'health food shop'!

  • I'm not embarrassed to be seen to be frugal any more. I was lucky enough to be brought up in a household that never had any spare money, so had a fund of half-remembered tips & tricks to fall back on when I decided to swim against the tide, abandon my career & become a SAHM just as the mortgage interest rate hit 15%. At first it was hard going & I will admit to the odd session of burying my head under the pillow & sobbing when members of my peer group told me about the exotic holidays they were planning, or their latest designer "bargain". But now, although we're worlds apart, I know I'm the lucky one - most of them are still struggling to pay off enormous mortgages & credit card debts, their kids are at the same universities as mine despite the massive school fees, or worse (just heard that one's in The Priory) and their glamorous jobs feel like millstones round their necks. The book "Your Money Or Your Life" puts it all in perspective, as does the TWG; every time you spend money you don't need to, you are giving up a little bit of your actual life in exchange for it - what could be worth that?
So don't be ashamed to use those pennies wisely - in the long run you are buying your own freedom with them, so be proud!

  • im ashamed to say it never entered my head to use the self service tills to pay for my shopping with all the change out of the change tin we save!! ive always used to coinstar machine ... :o
but i can tell you now, from this minute forward i will def just use the self service till and tip the coins in there!!!

we often shop in our local CS's, they know us by first names now as we go up most saturdays - my twin boys often chat to the old 'uns working there (nowt like cute twin boys to start a conversation with even the sullenest of people!!) and they proudly spend a £ or 2 of their spending money in there.

    :T
wading through the treacle of life!

    debt 2016 = £21,000. debt 2021 = £0!!!!
  • If you have a hsbc (or first direct) account, they have coin counting machines in some of their branches that you can pay directly into your account, with no charge :D When we emptied our demijohn of change we got £440 odd :D
