  • I'm embarrassed to say I used a coinstar once when they were first in the supermarkets and didn't realise they charged a percentage and just thought I'd get the voucher to pay for my shopping and I put in lots of coppers but also 5 pound coins too.

Didn't do that again....what an idiot

Probably not tbh , they would rather have card payments , saves them time in bagging up cash for banking .

Nope what you are doing (and by using the Coinstar machine too) is cutting down on the amount of change they have to order in, this costs the supermarkets and other big retailers a small fortune.

i'm well known as being tight, my sister in law once said is it true you only really buy food and nothing else, i was like what sure i just bought a 32" t.v :rotfl:which i could afford to buy due to deals on here/hukd and by the money i'd saved by not spending £150 a week on food (like her mum) or £80 on make-up because i decided i just had to have it

we have a great life lots of yummy food, new highend laptops and t.v which is all because of my frugal ways, i'll be the one having the last laught as in my old age i will own my own home and know how to make my pension last

i have no shame i tell everyone about any offers i see, and love my bargains.....i have nothing to be ashmaed of and neither do you

  • Hi this is my first post but have been a lurker for a long time.

I am not normally embarrassed about money saving and will happily go in charity shops and buy reduced or basic/value food in the supermarket. I was embarrassed today when I checked my receipt after shopping and had to ask the cashier as she hadn't taken the 50% discount off my bread rolls. It was only 25p but I felt really bad mentioning it to her. I nearly didn't mention it but decided that every penny counts, and it was her mistake not mine. Am really glad I did and won't be afraid to again :)

We have a Wilkinsons next to where I work, but my boss will trek all the way to Waitrose to buy the same cleaning products that are in Wilkinsons at half the price. She says she would be embarrassed if someone saw her coming out of there! She is in her 50s by the way, not a silly girl.

I don't get embarrassed by my thrifty ways at all. I have never had a reaction when I have been pouring coppers into the supermarket self-service machine. I don't do it during busy periods though as I don't want to hold up a massive queue of people on their lunch break.

I do think some thrifty people should be embarrassed though! E.g. the people who literally shove you out of the way to get to the reduced shelf at the supermarket.

I can't speak for other M&S stores but having been in there to purchase some stuff at lunchtime (using vouchers from surveys) they have half of their self service tills (8 in total) as cash only. In the Morrisons here 2 of the self-service tills are also cash only.
CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J
  • Thank you for posting this thread I don't consider it embarrassing in fact you have given me the idea for little ones desperately needed school tights and hairclips at the weekend, thinking I had nothing spare I have discovered well enough to cover it in the change jar. I will have spare also so thats 2x £1 cinema tickets (using the 20p's) and a shopping trip via supermarket in which I will grab a pack of popcorn also so thanks again x

Ps I will not at all feel embarrassed with my change keep your head held high

my boyfriend teased me the other day for loving this forum! he says it's full of saddos taking sachets of ketchup home from mcd's! i promptly corrected him! he would laugh if i told him i now take my makeup off with half a wipe rather than a whole one and then use the used wipe to have a quick wipe around the bathroom sink and taps! but i'm the one laughing cos i now only have to buy wipes half as much!

I'm even more MSE with my face wipes! I have sensitive skin and find that either Johnson's or Neutrogena face wipes are the only ones that don't set it off. They are usually expensive, but you can sometimes get them in B&M or Home Bargains. I then buy them in bulk without feeling guilty.

The best thing though, is that instead of chucking them away after using them, I put them in the washing machine with my whites load (usually in one of those net 'delicates' bags to stop them getting lost in the machine) and they come out soft and lovely and they are BRILLIANT at all sorts of things - dusting, polishing mirrors, stainless steel taps/hob/door handles, and they are particularly good for removing nail varnish without leaving the fluffy bits that cotton wool does.
You had me at your proper use of "you're".
  • Whenever I go in my local corner shop Iusually pay in change - and they are DELIGHTED!

Otherwise I bag up my change and pay it into the bank..
    :jFlylady and proud of it:j
