How do I watch internet TV in lounge?

I wish to watch internet television in the lounge.
My computer is in another room (within line of sight of tv area). I don't want wireless (bit cautious).
I'm considering buying a 24" monitor and moving the entire computer into the lounge but this is certainly not preferable. I'd like the computer to stay where it is.
I've therefore considered buying a 10 metre ethernet wire and 10 metre vga extension and connecting these from the computer to possible new monitor in the lounge. Wires trailing into other rooms doesn't sound good.
I was thinking about getting an internet television but am confused by it. Can someone explain how that would work? (someone in a shop mentioned a "dongle" but I don't know what that is).
Anyone know how I can best get around this problem without going wireless? I'm just considering possibilities at the moment and trying to get my head around what might be involved.
Many thanks in advance.

Whats wrong with wireless ?
A dongle(usb) would plug into a usb slot on the tv and connect wirelessly to the w/less router.0 -

Dunno DCFC79. I'm one of those ultra-fearful types who sends banking details over the net and worries they may be hacked. It's a high hurdle for me to jump over. Can you convince me I worry too much about this aspect??
Thanks.0 -
What TV do you currently have in the lounge and what connections. Also what are you looking to stream, youtube and iPlayer or full HDMansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0

Thanks Neil. Present TV is Philips 32PW9309C but this isn't an internet receiver TV. Was thinking about buying one (or a 24" computer monitor) so I can watch sports on it. So I would have to commit to one or the other. Bit confused at the moment but am tending to side with the monitor. Wondered if internet ready TV might be a better bet.0 -
you have nothing to fear with wireless, so long as you use the encryption on the router (WPA2) and have upto date anti virus you will be covered should anyone get hold of your details.
Being afraid of wireless because someone might hack the wireless connection and get your details, and being honest a virus is more likely to get your details than someone hacking your wireless, is about the same as being afriad to go outside incase someone mugs you and takes your purse.
as to worrying about cables and such
you can go down the homeplug route http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-PA211KIT-200Mbps-Powerline-Ethernet/dp/B004INVKP4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327063195&sr=8-1 which basically turn your houses electric wireing into a wired network with the units sending and receiveing the information between them (one next to and connected to your router by ethernet cables and the other at your computer connected by ethernet)Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -

Thanks gonzo. This homeplug technology is new to me so I'll explore it further before deciding which way to go.0 -
I take it then, that Phillips TV is a CRT (big heavy TV), possibly only with RF, Scart and RCA connections, S-video. It can be done but with cables.
Best bet would be a new smart TV or Net TV as you already said. Would be easier to have PC in same room, but could use the homeplug as suggested already.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -

You may be getting confused by 'internet television'. Bear in mind you do not have full access to the internet on these TVs. All you get are the apps (e.g. YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) which the TV manufacturers are licensed to offer on their respective internet portals.
To have full internet access (i.e. to go to the website of your choice) you still need to attach a computer to your TV.0 -

Don't be scared of Wifi for banking details - just make sure your home network is secured with WPA20
